If the trip to Australia still happens, I'd like to take along a set of binocs. I've never been a fan of the smaller sets, but since I only intend to carry 1 bag (carry on) I'll need something smaller. Although I really liked the large ones Parallax Bill had at the June 2008 match in Charlotte. Any suggestions? hsc

I'm a bit more frugal and ordered a pair of Bushnell H2O waterproof binos in 8X. I don't spend hours glassing like the guys in the mags. claim to do, but for general varmint hunting they've served me well.

They're much better than my old Bushnell's....bright and clear. Life is the crummiest book I ever read, there isn't a hook; Just a lot of cheap shots, pictures to shock, and characters an amateur would never dream up...

Having used cheesey binocs over the years, because of my inherit frugality, I surprised myself with a pair of surplus Czech D-6 binocs from Tennessee Guns. Really extra clear and sturdy 6x30's. Cost around $125. and compare with commercial types costing much more.

One of my favorites is my 1979 vintage K-Mart "Siam Cat" rubber coated 7x50s. As if heaven forbid you should misplace them or lose them, you won't be Singin' the Blues. A few years ago I bought some PRC made binoculars at K-Mart, they were poor quality. Optics OK, mechanics lousy.

No they are not anywhere near as bright and clear as any of the good brands of normal sized binocs, but they have always done the job very well. Armour coated, they fold up into a little belt case that will fit into my shirt pocket when not on my belt. For such a trip, I think they would be hard to beat for under several hundred dollars. I have used several pairs of high end binoculars over the years, and they can be a true joy to look through. But for convenience, portability and ease of always having them accessible, these little old pocket jobs are tough to beat! Sacrilege, I know!!!

You can easily put them in your pocket and forget they're there. Be sitting down when you ask about the price, though... I also have an old (20+years) set of Nikon rubber-coated, waterproof compact binoculars. The price was quite reasonable (at the time, anyway) and to this day are my go-to optics. Tim

I have a pair that I keep in the truck and they were $10 at Knob Creek 5+ years agao and they work good enough for me plus they don't take much space. Bill

I would still consider them a first choice if you plan to look through them much. Quality glass and large lenses make all the difference in the opinions and memories you will have of what you are looking at. I am not saying go out and buy or take a set of Ziess bino's but good glass can be bought for under $300.00 and you won't regret owning them. I also have a set of bow hunting bino's that are very nice but they cost $200 back in 1996. They were Cabela's Alaskan Guide brand but were probably made by Nikon or Leupold for Cabela's. Very nice glass in a 10X25 platform and will fit nicely in a shirt pocket but they are not exactly cheap, probably $275 today. Small bino's are nice if you have to have them for weight issues when packing way back in the mountains on foot but they are limited in many ways. Smokepole

For a little over $200 they are great.
