It is a Pakistani No4 Mk2 that the seller described as a Ishapore rework. I have some questions about the rifle that I hope some of you can help me with. First, what is the green paint that I have found all over the rifle, and who put it there? I appears to work and is neater than stripping the cosmoline off of a Turk. The rifle is a POF rework, not Ishapore....which of course is in India and not on the best of terms (unless you consider threatening to nuke each other friendly). Pakistani. Serial # C19076. Stamped "No4 MK.2, 58/P.O.F. Ishapore rework. Wood G+ to VG. Metal 92%, blackened. Matching stamped numbers on the receiver, bolt, mag, and forestock. Bolt head has Pakistan stamp, but is not numbered. Has VG (HI VG) lands, grooves shine."

Posts: 339 (05/23/09 01:58 AM) Veteran member Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	Stratton's sez that POF (Pakistani Ordnance Factory) made approx. 40,000 No.4 Mk II rifles w/ observed manufacturing dates of 1957, 1958, 1959,& 1960. The rilfes had new manufactured actions & barrels w/ a mix of POF made small parts & those from salvaged WW -era No.4 rifles. The POF serial number range has a "C" prefix.(Stratton, "Lee Enfield Rifles; vol. 2, Lee-Enfield No. 4 and No. 5 Rifles, p.176 ff (North Cape Publications, 1999). In Skennerton's latest tome on the Lee-Enfield (p. 371) he states basically the same & adds that POF machinery was the old ROF (Royal Ordnance Factory Fazakerly) No.4 Mk II machinery & No.4 Mk I tooling from BSA Shirley. According to Skennerton POF No4 Mk II rifles are just as well made finished as the last run of the ROF No.4 Mk II. I doubt that it is an Ishapore re-work becasue it still has the POF date & serial number. The Indians are famous (or infamous) for removing all original manufacture's stamps, marks, etc. I can't access all of the pictures, but the magazine, bolt, & action serial numbers match -- that is a very good thing, esp. on the bolt & action!! Is the same serial number on the for stock? -- it looks like it. I wouldn't mind a POF No.4 Mk II for my meager collection. IMO, you did quite well -- the rifle looks nice. No. 4s mfr'd at Wah arsenal were captured by India and "screwed" but retained the P.O.F. markings - many threads about these a few years ago - I had one. Green paint was a tropical service protectant; many consider the paint an integral part of the rifle's history. I hold a '17 BSA with Australian ownership markings with the green paint, and a P '07 bayonet scabbard with same. Would not dream of removing the paint.
