Started looking around, saw two Mosins on the wall behind the counter. Looked closer. Both standard vanilla Russians, one an M44, the other a 91/30. $279.00 for the M44. $249.00 for the 91/30. Entertained the thought of asking them if the price was negotiable, but I overheard the guy behind the counter in an arrogant toned discussion with a customer ahead of me. Nah. I'll save my money for another day... Did I wake up on the wrong planet this morning??? At that rate, I bet the next gun show will have a deal or two after all... I know, I know, I need a C&R... We have another shop here with consignment guns, but they are notoriously high too. Saw a Yugo SKS marked a little over 500 once, and a beat to crap then drug around the block Turk Mauser (missing parts) for something like 300. It's about all I can do to keep from busting out a laugh. Then they say the consignment guns aren't negotiable, but MAYBE they can get ahold of the owner. Thanks anyway. Now I see that Century is out of Mosins and haven't had any in stock for awhile. It makes me wonder if the supply is starting to run dry or are they just stuck in customs?

I do believe the "best" of the Mosin imports are already here, and now we're getting the Class B stuff, so to speak, with the counterbores and marginal bores, etc. I'm not seeing the quality of refurbs that I was back in 2003-04, with minty bores and beefy wood.

A local shop had a rack full of 91/30s, or mostly 91/30s, priced at $135. That's steep for a 91/30 but not bad for the Finn M28 and M91 I found mixed in the bunch! As a rule, we can't afford to buy guns now. But when I can tel my wife its worth 2-3 times the price tag, her Scott heritage says "Grab it!" I gotta go back again soon. S'truth, I can hardly believe it. The guy says "this one is too long to fit in the rack is why its laying there." Posts: 5397 (05/25/09 10:10 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	Some gun shop owners just don't care enough about old milsurps to look for a difference, so they throw an M91 in with some refurb 91/30's and don't care to look for any markings or anything because it's "just another greasy beat up rifle" they want to get rid of. My local shop certainly doesn't have that problem, the same Finn'ed Dragoon rifle has been sitting there for over a year marked at $350, I am really not buying any more rifles unless it's something really special, if it's still there on a day when I'm flush with cash then maybe it will be worth it to me, but I'm not really a Finn collector so my 3 M39's and SA marked M91's are fine with me.

They are the last of the cheap surplus rifles.

A shop over the river in Hosier [sp] land also has them for the same price and all are in just the same great shape. And yes, I've bought three of them so far...1943 Tula ex-siper { didn't know it had been a sniper till I started cleaning it } , 1944 Ish w/ a toe splice { first splice for a rifle, as I have carbines w/ the splice } and a 1942 Ish in a pre-war Tula marked stock that I am going to exchange w/ a 1932 Tula that's in a war time Ish stock. Price maybe either reigonal -or- politically motavated by some dealers.

I miss Louisville. Oh well, my C&R application is on the way from ATF. I really doubt I will ever spend another dime in any of these shops around here. General rule I find is if the dealer has several dozen Mosins his prices will be better because they can buy them at a better price. Take a small time shop and he buys 2 just to test the water sort of and of course he pays top dollar. His prices will reflect that generally being higher. They really need to make at the very least 45% or slightly more to exist. If he bought 10 or more his wholesale will run about $59 or so. Using the above ratio he will probably charge about $100 or so to cover costs and give himself a wiggle factor for discounts to special customers. Less than 10 and he will pay shipping and about $79 or so. I would say he will charge about $150 or so with again allowing a wiggle factor. Many dealers will pad that greatly and your option is to do what I do. If you know the guy say you are a little high what can you do for me? Nothing you just say No Thanks I can do better elsewhere. No one twists your arm to buy things! Walk away enough and people will know you and that if they want to make a sale they have to move a bit toward you price. Simple procedure and it works just great if you have some self control and common sense. You aren't always going to walk away with what you want but then that is part of life. This shop keeps around 15 to 20 mosin's on hand and gets new shipment regularly. 91/30 R-Guns $119 ea. Laminate stocks $129. Pahtu. Yeah, on second thought you're right - but you should still be able to get the common types for around $150 or less, and many of the uncommon types for $250 or less. Finn M27's, M28's and 28-30's can be quite spendy.....Dragoons, SA M38's can cost a pretty penny as well.....M27rv....SA M44's.....well those have avoided me so far....but down the road ya never know.... The most "exotic" I almost got was a Finn'ed M91 Dragoon I have been eyeing up at my local gun shop but not sure I want, trying to justify another Mosin when I already have over 30 of them, and most haven't had a live round chambered since 2003 or so......some have never seen a round. I would love to someday find time to take all of them out and shoot them.
