Cleaning Crud off Finnish M39 |
Lead | |
|
I just got a beautiful M39 with a "sticky" stock. Unfortunately, pieces of old newspaper and other crud are glued to it. What is the best way to get
rid of the crud without destroying the finish.
Thanks, Axel |

Mineral Spirits would be my first choice. rub it on with a rag soaked in mineral spirits.

Tear it down & give all the metal parts a good wiping & soaking too.........mineral spirits will take off all the gunk on everything, and don't
forget.........pictures of that M39 when it's all back together!!

Thank you , trying. What the h*** is this stuff sticking to the gun. Feels like tar or resin to me. Mineralspirit has a tough time with it. Yes, will send
picture after its finished.
Cheers, Axel |

I've encountered that stuff in the barrel channel and specks of it on the exterior.
The specks came off with a fingernail using a scratching motion. I left the crud alone that was in the barrel channel/trigger/receiver areas. It wouldn't budge.

It might be a Finned stock. However, sticky is sticky and that can't be helped. What I'd recommend is a scrub down with some acetone or lacquer
thinner. Whatever is sticky on the surface will come away readily with the solvents. MS has a hard time with that kind of material sometime. Those solvents
won't harm anything, either. Just wash it down with a nice terrycloth rag scrubbing all the sticky stuff off and see what's there. Let us know!
