I have a recently purchased Glenfield (Marlin) 60 .22lr. I want to re-finish the stock, it seems to have some sort of cheap paint finish on it and is really
trashed looking. It also has some details in the stock (see picture) and I'm wondering what will happen when I try to strip it. I assume the stripping
chemical will pool up in these areas and require some dabbing up. I'm considering staining the stock and again assume the stain will pool up in the same
spots. Seems to me that the stain pooling up will result in a darker shade, which might bring out the squirrel and the stripes.....is my thinking straight here
or is there something I should know about first?
Don't think I'm destroying any value on this common, inexpensive rifle. Also, the photo does not show the full extent of the finish damage, in case you are wondering why all the fuss over a couple of chips.
Here's two of the finished stock - stripped it, put several coats of stain on it, oiled it. Much better!

) and use it to remove any accumulation of gunk in there. Once you've
stripped it, restain it and refinish it with whatever you are comfortable with. Since it's a modern rifle the choice is really yours. But you won't
harm it at all. Just don't use any water-borne finishes on it sticking, instead, with petroleum or acohol based materials. You may even want to use
shellac as your final clear coat. Spray it, don't use a brush!
