Matching numbers. Looked dirty with some kind of grease- not cosmo, but dark-colored. On butt socket, was 1964. I know there were other markings but I can't recall now what was on it. I don't recall seeing FTR, for one of those factory refurbish jobs. Can it be a Pakistani or Indian rifle? Were No. 1 patterns being built in the 1960s in those factories? Thanks. Posts: 888 (06/04/09 01:11 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	I believe that 1964 was right around the transition for the Indian Ishapore from .303 (as a No1 Mk III) to 7.62 NATO (to a 2A or 2A1, that otherwise looks like a No1 Mk III). It would be stamped RFI. Crunch

Posts: 301 (06/06/09 11:38 PM) active member Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	We know that No.1 MK III* (or MK 3* as they are stamped) production was restarted at Ishapore after the 7.62 2A and 2A1 rifles were completed. Dates do indeed run into the 1980s and it isn't just cleaning out old stock. They were made in some quantity. While the end date of production is debatable, rifles as late as 1988 have been found....which oh by the way is exactly a Century since the Lee officially replaced the Martini-Henry for general frontline issue....not bad for a design that the Brits were looking to replace as obsolete in 1914, before the start of WW I put the idea on hold. In so far that the rifles remain in common usage for internal security, it may be some time before their final chapter is written in India. As to Pakistan production, they have never made the No.1 MK III* pattern rifles. Pakistan Ordnance Factory (POF) made Lee-Enfields in the No.4 MK2 pattern.
