So after lurking on these forums I decided to pick up a Mosin Nagant. I was more concerned about it being a shooter than a collection piece. After searching
locally to no avail, I finally decided to just order one from J&G. When I called up the local gun shop to line up a transfer ( I do don't have a ffl or
a C&R ) the owner told me he had a few on hand. So I decided to check them out before I placed an online order. There were 3 M-N's there two were in
decent shape and one was good looking. Unfortunately the good looking one had an import billboard 10 times the size of god on the receiver. Initially I passed
on the billboard, but once I broke out the bore light and noticed a bright shiny barrel with strong rifling, I was hooked. $120 later I walked out the door
with an Ishy 91/30 with bayonet, sling and cartridge pouch. A little more than I would have paid online, but after shipping and transfer fees are factored in,
a bit less. I would always rather inspect a rifle before I buy it anyways and at the rate mil surp rifles are going up in price ( mauser collector here) I
figured why not.

Sweated the cosmo off of the rifle yesterday. Slight wear on the wood from what looks like the barrel bands being removed but other than that she cleaned up
nice. Now if only I didn't need a barrel vice to get the bayonet on and off (ok so it isn't quite that bad, but it is a bear to get on or off). I read
that that was fairly common with mosins since russian military doctrine stated that they were to be left on unless in a vehicle. Any ideas how to make mounting
the bayonet easier? I understand that the rifles were zeroed with the bayonet attached and I would like to fire the rifle with the bayonet mounted. It does
make transporting it in my wrangler or my escort a bit of a problem though.
as a side note, matching bolt and receiver. Year of production 1939

May need to spread open the end of the bayonet with a wide bladed screw driver so it's not to tight. Just a little at a time.

Hmmm.... Having issues with adding pics
[i] /i] There we go. I hope
Trip to the range was good. Bought some surplus bulgarian ammo and a couple boxes of sellier and bellot. Other than not wanting to feed 2 rounds (out of 100+) it worked flawlessly. Accuracy was so so until I decided I had to try out the bayonet. It really made a huge difference. Note that all of these targets were hung sideways so I could fit more on the board, so it actually isn't creeping right, but rather was my attempt to shoot a little lower after each group. First pic is me just trying to put rounds in the black as fast as possible at 50 yards, last 2 were the best of the 100 yard attempts ( it only took about 70 rounds to get some decent groups) [i] /i]

I credit the rifle for the accuracy. Part of it has to do with the fact that I'm fairly big (6 foot, 230 lbs, little bit of a gut , but in fairly good
shape, I can still crawl through air ducts, thanks work) and most of the guns I have are second hand from my pops who is about 10" shorter and weighs 160.
It feels nice to have a rifle that has some substance. It is a lot easier to control than most of the guns I have which kinda feel like little pop guns in my
hands. As a result of using tiny/light guns I have developed something of a soft touch for firearms. Possibly the first person to compliment a 91/30 with
bayonet due to its size and weight.
How do I stop some big mean mother hubbard from tearing me a structurally superfluous new behind? The answer is a gun, and if that don't work use more gun.

"Now I just have to keep my eyes open for a M44 or 38"
Friend, I hate to tell you, there's nothing "or" about anything Mosin Nagant. It's more a matter of 'M44 and M38 and 91/59 and 91/38 and M91 and Dragoon and Cossack and SA Marked and Polish and Chinese and Finnish and Spanish Civil War and and and and and....∞' Welcome to the most fun you'll ever have putting a collection of shooters together! You'll have a ball, if not much space to turn around in , so always keep a couple of hundreds in your wallet whenever you venture out, you'll gonna need them ;-) Eli

perhaps I should edit that to say "I will be looking for a M44 or M38 next". They had a couple of finns (as well as mausers of many flavors, lee
enfields including a no. 5 jungle carbine, carcanos, garands, an arisaka and a steyr m95. I love that shop) when I went to pick up some more ammo.
Unfortunately I just got laid off so I am going to have to keep spending to a minimum. Looks like I'll only be buying ammo for a little while.

If you can find one the 91/59's are worth a look. I picked up one last year and its a great shooter, has the best trigger of all my Milsurps. Its the
last time the Russians reworked the old bolt actions and they got it right...

Hopefully you'll be able to find a new and better situation soon.
The thing I like best about M/Ns is that because so many were made, the prices for most are pretty reasonable; if there is a cheaper firearm type out there as good as and varied as the M/N family, I'd sure like to know about them! Cheers
