Firstly, I know nothing about Mauser rifles and I won't try to bluff you into thinking I do. There seems to be so many variations that a poor boy just doesn't know what to think! I would like to post a few pictures and see if someone can help identify these rifles. They actually belong to a neighbor widow lady (really, I promise!) who would like for me to buy them but neither of us know much about the Mauser. Rifle #1 This I think I have learned from this site, is a Yugoslavian Mauser (by the crested seal) it is an eight millimeter, other than that I'm cluless. Athough I wonder why this rifle is not blued. Rifle #2 I have also read on this fourm about Mausers that were intentionally made to be hard to reconize the country of manufacture. This Mauser has nearly no markings whatsoever. Is it an eight millimeter as well? Any information will be greatly appreciated. An old man has to start learning somewhere!

The first one started out as a K98, ended up in Yugoslavia where they dubbed it an M98. Second looks to be an M48A or M48B (others will know more). I'm basing that on the stamped, not milled floor plate shown The lack of markings is noted, these are referred to as BO (bez oznake (sp?)). I'm a little murky about the history of these - have only vague knowledge that they may have been made for export to someplace they didn't want to leave tracks to. As to values, I'll leave that to others, as well as filling in on my slight knowledge. Unless they have been messed with they will be in 8mm Mauser. And welcome to these forums! Thanks for the info and the welcome! It's tough for a newbie to get a idea of just what he is looking at when it comes to these Mauser's. I'm still reading other posts trying to find more information that applies to my questions and hopefully I can get an idea of a fair price to give the owner. She's a nice lady and I don't want to cheat her but I have to make sure I don't overpay as well. Again, thanks for your input.

Yep, Yugo mausers, 7.92x57 aka 8mm Mauser. The first is (as noted) a German built Model 98. The siderail markings show it was reworked at Kragujevac (Preduzece or "factory" code #44) between 1946-1950. It would have been scrubbed of most Nazi markings though Waffenampt were often left, then refinished. Only parts needed to repair the rifle would have been changed but the history is erased. The presense of the Yugo crest/markings show they intended the weapon for their own service use. The bottom rifle is an M48B-bo. Unmarked save for serial # and proof markings. Mine has the circle Bk (latin VK) military acceptance stamps too. This blank feature was, I believe, not so much to hide the rifle'sd origins since the Yugos were the only people making these, and the proof marks would have betrayed their origin in any case. These were left blank more so that buyers could stamp their own national and military markings on them or leave them blank as desired. The syrian weapons are good examples of foreign marked M48s. Those would have left Kragujevac as bo. The stamped floor plate alone would denote a model A. To date, I have not seen a confirmed mode A as a bo. The stamped trigger guard on your rifle (note the rib running around the sides) mark it as a model B. You'll find the trigger guard magwell is a manufactured assy instead of machined from one piece. Other parts like the follower and H-band should be welded too. there's a sticky about comparative parts here. Sorry but I have to run. I hope this helps. I have much to learn about the Mauser and it seems this site contains a wealth of it! I guess from what I gather from your response and that of mh47, the first rifle is likely a Nazi rifle that was reworked in Yugoslavia shortly after the war. I will continue to check it for markings but I think all have been removed. I did manage to shoot one the rifles last weekend. I managed to find a few rounds of MM in a box of 7.62x54R and 7.5 French and headed to the range. It was great fun but is it just me or do these Mauser's kick like a mule! I can't wait to find some more ammo. Again thanks for the help in pointing me in the right direction.

To make it easier on the shoulder you could get some Romanian surplus ammo which is loaded lighter and does ok for shooting paper. You can find this at Aim Surplus somewhere around $100 for 340? round tin.( much cheaper than factory ammo.) Just make sure you clean your rifle right after shooting with either a mix of water and ammonia or even Windex, to get rid of the corrosive residue from surplus ammo. Probably should clean the bolt face as well. After this, dry patch the bore then some Hoppes, then dry patches, then a little oily patch for storage. Enjoy 'em. old one

Posts: 6819 (06/18/09 10:53 AM) Veteran member Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	When I got involved with 8mm Mausers, I was shooting mainly the cheap Turk ammo in them, which is probably the hottest loaded 8mm Mauser ammo around. It made my 1903A3 feel like a kitten compared to a 1939 BYF K-98 rifle! But it was sink or swim for me, so I got used to it. Then I wound up with nearly 10,000 rounds of the 1950's vintage Yugo ammunition, and that did not kick nearly as hard, even though its 196 grain bullet is a lot heavier than the 154 grain Turk ammo. Mainly it required a different sight picture, as he heavier bullets shot way too high at 100 yards for me as compared to the lighter Turk rounds, which were not too far from POA. Recoil has never bothered me much. I just remember to keep the stock pulled back into my shoulder as hard as I can and let fly. I have to do all my shooting off the bench, as I screwed up my left arm a few years ago when I broke my left shoulder from a fall on ice and I now have a limited range of movement in my left arm and it is not high enough to raise a rifle to shooting position. Only one rifle I ever fired I do not like. That is a single shot Ruger No.1 in .458 Lott caliber shooting 500+ grain bullets. That little carbine jumps when fired and the trigger housing always came back and pounded the back side of my trigger finger, making it black and blue for several days. Curt
