Would an M1 Abrams have done better? |

Yes!! Horse power to weight ratio favors M1 Abrams.Challenger 1000 hp.M1 Abrams 1500 hp.Challenger is diesel, got to wind it up.M1 Abrams is turbine, power is
instantaneous.Turret speed is about the same in both.Target and thermal sighting system favors Challenger, slightly.Challenger 120mm rifled tube.M1 Abrams 120mm
Rheinmetal smoothbore. Both about equel. It comes down to the men in the tank. Our guys are combat tested.More time in the field, more time in the tank.Make a
mistake and your dead !Only the strong survive,it"s that simple. Our guys would have gotten him sooner. The guy in the Rover was on borrowed time the minute
he started the vehicle.Don't need a direct hit to take out a soft target like this, close is good enough.

An Abrams tank wouldn't waste a main gun round on the Rover because either the 7.62 coaxial machine gun or the commander's 50 cal would be more than
adequate on a thin skinned vehicle. When the decision was made to go from the M68 105mm gun to a 120mm gun, the US Army tested both the rifled Vickers 120mm
and the smoothbore Rheinmetal 120mm. The Rheinmetal gun was judged to be superior.

The guy is Jeremy something; he's 6' 4" tall and not particularly thin; the sight of him folding up like a carpenter's ruler getting in and
out of some small car is something to behold. The program is Top Gear; it's on BBC America, if you can get that channel on your cable. I watch it every
chance I get. He's always making snide remarks about Americans (and Germans when he gets the chance) but it's great entertainment. They've had a
couple of features on the Bugatti Veyron, an incredible car with just over 1000 bhp, and a top speed of over 250 mph. One of their more or less firearms
related features involved some little English strugglebuggy trying to evade paint balls shot from a full auto paint gun mounted in the turret of a miniature
replica tank. I don't think the tank was mobile, although it could traverse and the gun could elevate. It sure looked like fun to shoot.
They did have one other program related to firearms: they were doing winter sports and had a "biathlon", only instead of skiis, they had 4WD vehicles. The other contestand, James May, had a proper Biathlon rifle and did fairly well with it: he shot two strings, one going clean and the other missing two targets. Jeremy thought he would do one better for speed and used a H&K MP5. Of course, as any one who has shot full auto knows, he didn't hit a single target. Seemed to have a lot of fun holding back the trigger an hosing down the countryside, though.

I think that's the Brit who pissed off a lot of us Corvette enthusits when he insulted, abused, and then blew up a C4 Corvette.

The M1 Abrams, the Challanger and the Leopard II are all three, basically, equal in all aspects. The Leopard has won every time that it has been matched in
"shoot offs" against the others, but I would attribute that to the abilities of the crew more than the tank. As for the Challangers diesel engine, it
may not spool up as fast as a freaking turbine, but it is one hell of a good engine and really does the job it was designed for.
Personally? I wouldn't want to get within five miles of the muzzle of ANY tank main gun regardless of the circumstances. Eric

So, Eric, my friend, other than staying outside the main battle tanks' field of fire, how are you doing?

Top Gear is a great show. I watch it frequently. Those three guys have a ball with all manner of vehicles. Alot of high end (big dollar) sports cars and
everyday stuff too. I love British humor, and the show is quite funny as well as offering interesting looks at various autos most of us have never seen.
Interesting stuff.
It seems the only vehicles they care for less than most American offerings, are the British cars.......
