CZ 52 "stovepipe" problem |
Lead | |
|
This may be an old worn-out topic for most of you. But for someone who is new to semi-automatics (this is my first), I need the advice of the experts. First
of all, as a rifle collector, any pistol is alien territory for me. I picked up a CZ52 on the advice of a friend. I thought it might be interesting to branch
out a bit. Well, I took it to the range yesterday, and I could not get off more than two rounds before it jammed again and again. My friend said it was
stovepiping. The used case was stuck in the chamber as well as the next live round. I was firing surplus Polish 7.62x25, so I thought at first (because so
many cases were split) that it was the ammo. But my friend was using the same ammo from the same batch and his CZ52 operated flawlessly. Pistol has been
cleaned.

A new recoil spring may be in order. I don't have the link, but try Wolf Gunsprings. Polish and Bulgarian ammo bites. Get some Romainian.

Get a FIRM grip on her. "Limp Wristing" is common with some shooters.
I have a bud who can limp wrist and jam a machine gun.

I tried S&B ammo - no difference. I tried my buddy's mag -- no difference. I tried my buddy's wrists -- no difference. Still stovepiping. I ordered
new springs from Wolff. Then I will check extractor.

Tried new springs. Same problem. Expert shooter tells me that it's the ejector, not the extractor. Any thoughts on this?

I do not believe it's your ejector. It can only eject if the extractor pulls the spent case back far enough for it to contact it for ejection. So, if the
spent case isn't getting there to be ejected, there are only two things preventing that action.
One, your extractor isn't doing its job. Meaning that its tension is incorrect, thus not properly grasping the rim so that the spent case can be ejected. Not having a pistol handy at present and relying from memory, I believe that the CZ52 has a seperate coil spring that exerts tension on the extractor. It may be weak or broken. The extractor lip itself may be chipped, burred, or otherwise damaged which would also inhibit extraction. It may also just be a replacement part that was incorrectly manufactured. I have run into this once in the past with an RPK that was built on a brand new parts kit. The extractor was not finish machined and it could not grasp the extraction groove of the case at all. A new extractor fixed the problem. Two, your chamber may be to rough for proper extraction. You really don't want a mirror finish in a chamber, but then again you don't want one that is so rough that it, essentially, grabs the spent case, holding it so the the extractor can't do it's job. I would first check the extractor spring, then take a good look at the extractor to insure it's in good condition, then inspect the chamber for roughness. eb

Are you sure you have a 762x25? There were some 9mm barrels put on these for the US market?
Considering the info given, split cases only in your gun, stovepiping, etc. It is a possibility. Not trying to be a smart ass, but just a thought. I had the genious idea of having my CZ52 9mm converted to 38 Super. The gunsmith that was going to do it measured the chamber first. It was already oversized so he couldn't. (My reasons - a. 38 Super is a better cart than 9mm, b. 38 Sup fits the mag better - same length as 762. c. 9mm would not feed HP ammo. d. gun was stronger than needed for 38 Sup)

I'll check it out. In the meantime, I tried bending the ejector just a tad inward, and I was able to get off 4, sometimes 5 (the max at my range), shots
without a stovepipe. But then it reverted back to stovepiping after 2 or 3 shots.

IMO, I would try a few different types/brands of ammo before replacing or tweaking parts.
Some pistols are more forgiving than others in regard to ammo choice.

Hi pastmaster, one thing I would look at are the two rollers in your pistol. Make sure the still roll freely. Also check the ramps in the slide. I know that
you probably have all ready Cleaned the pistol very well checking the recoil spring for built up crud. I have a 1953 and a 1954 and i really enjoy them. I know
some will laugh, but I use MOBIL 1 15/50 in the summer here in Texas and Mobile 1 5/30 in the winter. I would like to try the 0/20 but haven't found any of
it yet. I have used Czech surplus as well as S&B Yugo surplus and Wolf.____ Jim___ Few Things Beat Quality Time The Trigger
