Old Time members..... |

I was just thinking about members on the forum from a few years ago. Do any of you folks remember some of the members from some years back? The one I
remember is "yoteshooter", man that guy was a kick - Seemed he hit the MN scene hard and then flamed out? Not to be heard from again?

I posted a similar thread in the straight-pull forum a few weeks ago asking what the heck happened to Goex FFF?
It's a shame some 'old timers' simply vanished over the years... Although, there has been very long periods of time I haven't posted here. I suppose I just don't have anything to contribute... But I am around... -Palimino |

There are several I can think of. Kevan 9mm, Biff, Oklahomaman and the guy who was offering to fix up bad triggers on SKS rifles, but that might have been
Kevan.

Wasn't Kevan9mm banished from this site for over the top rants?? There were a couple others banned during the election year for bad language, racial slurs,
etc....
I joined this Forum back in '02 or '03, and it seems that about 20% of the experienced long time members have drifted away for whatever reason. I think significant percentage of of us are getting up in years and some are passing away or overwhelmed with medical issues. |

Yes, I remember M39 Davis - I believe he passed away.....
I remember a couple members...Pittbull of love? (LOL or something like that..) and another member or two....one was a member who mainly collected M44's - Doctor...something? I also remember Kevan9mm - Yeah, it seemed he had an agenda "Alot of the "old timers" seemed to have wandered....I guess i'm one of 'em!" LOL....just about all of us who have responded so far are... How goes it is the land of Fog and eternal mist....? Are the Puyallup shows any good nowadays? "I posted a similar thread in the straight-pull forum a few weeks ago asking what the heck happened to Goex FFF?" I remember Goex FFF, I always used to peruse the straight pull forum, interesting place back in the day, I remember Goex FFF & I remember your posts Palimino! I miss the "gun of the week" posts Gunmaker had done in the past - Very cool & what a substantial collection he had - I believe he got out of the MN gun collection hobby(I have one or two of his pieces...) - Man that guy was a wealth of info. "Oklahoma Man"
Hmmm, I vaguely remember that handle...? Pahtu. |

Oklahomaman was into blackpowder cartridge rifles, IIRC. MrHainey was another oldtimer; he knew a lot about BP cartridge rifles and Gew 88s.

I seem to recall Oklahomaman popping in one day a few months back and said he finally got shanghied and wound up married to some gal. That probably put a crimp
to a lot of his shooting activities.

Kivaari is still around doing SKS trigger work. I think "KyDoc" passed away. Interests and collection focuses change over time. Some old timers get
fed up with computers and decide they can live a good life without them. Some guys change jobs to one that require a lot of travel, so 'puter time is more
limited. Some guys get ensnared by high-maintainence womenfolk. A myriad of things can happen. Gunmaker is very busy in his trade and has sold off some of his
desireable Finns. He has a website. Some newbies come here and intend to set the world on fire with their limited knowledge, not realizing that their own
arrogance keeps them from learning something new. They usually don't last long. It is nice to know that although some of the most respected posters are
gone, they are not forgotten. Regards.

Three guys that come to mind for me are Rick Veal (I don't remember his member name), an Arisaka guru. I bought a T99 from him. The second one is Udo Bauer
a long time No 5 Jungle Carbine collector in Las Vegas (I can't remember his member name either). I bought a beautiful JC from him several years ago.
Finally, there's Yockey5 (I think that's it), the M95 afficianado, although I do see him pop up from time to time.

The dwindeling activity on the forums is not taking place just here. There is another Mosin Nagant based forum that used to have a huge member base, but sadly,
is very inactive now. Reasons mentioned earlier in this thread are contributers, and bad, or contrary attitudes are another. I used to really like a MN site,
but it started getting so hostile I quit posting there. I now visit it about once every six months.
Maybe the knowlege of these things is just maxed out. It seems like a lot of the posts now are of the "I-just-got-bitten-by-mosins-bug," or "look-at-my-new-baby" type topics. I am by no means knocking these kinds of threads, just pointing out that they seem to be frequent. I guess since there are not a whole lot of new, or unusual pieces popping up, things have slowed. It really is too bad, because it used to be be real community. Still is, I guess, just not as much. |

I was just over at the Rememberance Forum at the Gunboards website, and there is a post that says Chu Lai 68 was killed in a car accident this weekend. Chu Lai
posted a lot in Parallax Bills at the Veterans forum and the Military history forum.

Well... I'm still around.
Don't get to spend too much time on the forums or post too much anymore, because of change in job and more travel, after my FIL passed away about 2.5 years ago. I try to take a quick look at the boards - not all of the forums, but many of them - just to check out what is happening, on a regular basis, but I don't post a whole lot. NotPC is correct: Kivaari is still going strong on the SKS trigger jobs. In fact, I talked to him on the phone, not too terrible long ago. Although he didn't really participate on Parallax's Forums, I believe guy that was a regular on Gunboards, "Big Mike", passed away, several years ago. He used to make trips to Russia and help out with an orphanage - I think that was the same guy.
Good Shooting and God Bless!!

Goex FFF got mad at me about something or other an up and quit. A couple of people have lost their tempers with me and done that and I have no control over
that type of thing. The people that know me personally may suggest I am not hard to get along with.
I have not heard that about chu lai. If true I feel a loss as he was a good man as far as I could tell. I miss Russell (Oklahomaman).. He is one of my oldest site moderators and no-nonsense enforcers. I think he had a change of life style getting hitched. Maybe I too should run a remembrance forum to keep track of those we have lost. I knew Lynn Davis personally and miss having him around. He shot on my 3 man bolt action team in a match in Ramsuer, NC years ago and could accurately shoot his old 8mm Turk out to 500 yards. He was a kind and generous friend. Pitbull is still around and still my "brother from another mother" . I saw him last at the CR-PC Military Rifle Match just a couple weeks ago. He still is one of my best friends and site moderators. Nice seeing you post again Darrell. Darrell (M39Scout) is also one of my friends.

FWIW, this site is getting an average of well under 100 new post per day when a few years ago it was getting over 500 average per day. It's a lot slower
and the reasons for it are the market for milsurps is way down compared to a few years ago. Prices have climbed and the sweet cheap "interesting"
milsurps seem to be long gone and not coming back. Another reason is everyone and his brother started their own forums thinking they could do it better so
instead of a half dozen big collectors sites like this one was at one time, you have literally dozens of them all pretty much the same except for personal
differences that seemed to be important enough to break off and cause someone to do their own.
None have proven to me to be better than Tucos or mine or any number of those original half dozen or so that started in the late 90's. I'll keep this one open as long as there is an interest and some traffic flow but the heyday is long gone as are many of the original members. For better or worse time marches on and things change. Kinda like life.

I think Rick Veal sold off most all his Arisaka collection. At least he told me he was getting out of them completely the last time I talked to him at a local
show. Nice guy, always a friendly face and conversation each time we met around the area.
I think Yockey started his own collector boards. Not sure if I remember correctly though. I miss Gunmaker's post and activity here. I don't know why he left. Maybe he got shook loose by Yuku. Many people hated Yuku during the initial problems changing over from EZ Boards and just gave up. I'm sorry they couldn't make it but I had no choice in the matter. Yuku took over and offered no options and although many people told me all I had to do was start up some new forums with one of their personal selections of host it is simply too hard to change it all without loosing even more members so I decided to stick it out here. I appreciate those that still hang out here with me. We do our best.

Chuck, you're just about "father time" here by now.
Hope to see you again sometime my friend. Maybe you need to hitch a ride down with HSC or Smokepole50 to one of our military matches. You'd love it.
