How the heck do I get this cleaning rod out????? |
Lead | |

I just picked up a pretty nice Spanish short rifle. As I always do with a new gun, I began to disassemble the rifle for a thorough cleaning and inspection.
Unfortunately the cleaning rod just turns and turns and won't come out. The upper barrel band will not come off until the rod is removed so the upper
band retaining spring can be depressed. I removed the lower band, handguard, trigger guard, etc.... and have checked out the barrel channel in the stock.
There is no cleaning rod nut visible, but I have dripped some penetrating oil through an access slot to lube the nut. I suspect the nut is frozen solid on
the rod. I have attempted to unscrew the rod while putting both upward and downward pressure on the rod, with no success. I tapped on the end of the rod
and it seems to have about one inch of end play. Do any of you guys have any advice to get this rod out??

Press in on the lower band while pulling up on the rod.
Watch your eye, or other body parts while doing this cleaning rod extraction.

The mystery is solved | ||

I had my kid hold the rifle while I tried to unscrew the rod, and the rod just fell out when he pushed the knurled surface of the lower band spring.
There's a notch cut in the rod that is gripped by the lower band spring. I feel like Homer Simpson

When I got my first Spanish model 1916, I had the same problem. Instead of asking here first, I pulled the rod out as far as it would go, then cut it off,
letting the stub drop back down in the rod channel, which let me get the the thing disassembled. Once I got it apart, and looked at the groove in the stub
piece, I said a lot more than "Doh!" as I was welding the two pieces back together!

Bean, I bought a replacement rod from Springfield Sporters a while back that looked like it was made last week but is, in fact, original.
You might check with them if your looking for one.
