Fed my "Crack" addiction once again with a beautiful 1944 Tikka barreled Mosin 91/30. It has an antique "sea salvaged " receiver. Taking a
loser clook at the pattern of the pitting it looks more like "blood splattered". Does anybody know anything about the term and the history of those
receivers? If they were submerged in salt water wouldn't have pitting on the inside? any input would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers, Axel

Without looking at the receiver.....I would venture a guess that since all Finn assembled MNs were made up from salvaged receivers, the condition can vary
widely from extremely nice to well worn with much old pitting. I have read that the receivers could have come from rifles that wintered under the snow before
being salvaged, or that broken rifles were salvaged & the condition of those salvaged rifles were poor.
Most likely the receivers were not "Sea Salvaged", nor blood pitted. Mother nature is more than likely the cause of the pitting on the receiver. No answer for pitting not found within the receiver, could be the Finns polished that area up? Pahtu. |
