Posts: 408 Apr 8 10 9:40 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Tags : None I just bought a 1891/30 Mosin-Nagant ($98) that came with the works - Beautiful Rifle, Bayonet, Sling, 2 Belt Pouches and this little setup in a bag with lots of Cosmoline - I know what Item A is for - screwdriver and Firing Pin Adjustment indicator. What are the other goodies for ? The Bottle (Item C) is fascinating - why two caps ? What do the two symbols on the bottle mean ? I never paid any attention to this stuff until I got them in the Box with the rifle. How are these items used ? They look like something from the Napoleonic Era. Question: If I bought this whole thing for $98 in a box, what do you suppose the Russian Government received for it ? $5 ? It keeps the rod centered in the bore to protect the rifling. "C" is the oil bottle. One side is for oil, and the other is for cleaning fluid. "D" is the "T" handle for the cleaning rod. "E" is the cleaning jag for patches. Stan.

Posts: 408 Apr 8 10 10:16 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	The Bottle has sides ? Mine is so "gooped up" with Cosmoline that I didn't remove the caps. OK - makes sense with two caps on it. Do you know what kind of Oil and Cleaning Solvent the soldiers were issued ? Would mine have any liquids in there now ? Wonder if any of THAT is around in some 'Army Surplus" store ? I don't understand the Muzzle Protector for the Cleaning Rod. What is there to protect ? Are you saying that the cleaning rod can somehow damage the rifle's bore ?! You'd have to spin it with an electric drill to damage the bore with a simple cleaning rod. Were they issued cleaning patches ? What do you suppose the Russians were paid for my $98 setup ? Posts: 38 Apr 9 10 1:27 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	The muzzle protector is to protect the crown of the barrel, not the bore. No doubt a lot of the counter bored Mosins we see around had their crowns damaged through over enthusiastic cleaning. One side of the oil bottle held oil, and the other held an alkali solution for use as a solvent. I believe the Finns used petrol or kerosene as a solvent. I'd say any free cloth was used as a patch.

Posts: 824 Apr 9 10 3:14 PM Veteran member Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	According to Lapin in his book "The Mosin-Nagant Rifle" the letter that looks like an English H is the Russian letter N and stands for "neft" which means "oil". The letter that looks somewhat like an english W is pronounced "shch" (as in fresh) and stands for the Russian word "shchalok" which means "alkaline solution". Posts: 408 Apr 25 10 7:37 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Mosin-Nagant Field Accoutrements (updated Picture) Just thought I would clean up the loose ends, as it were.... I put 5W-30 Motor Oil in the "Oil" Side and 1 part Clear Ammonia, 3 parts Water and 4 drops Liquid Dish Detergent in the "Alkaline Solution" side. My own concoction. Volitile & Alkaline plus some detergent in water. Should be innocuous. DoctorBill PS - it is either Accouterments or Accoutrements - as to spelling. Either way is correct according to the Dictionary. I have been learning about these rifles and hoping to pick one up. The price tag was 499.00 it includes the rifle, bayonet, cleaning kit, sling and of course the scope and scope mount.

Posts: 2473 May 7 10 9:14 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Doc, I put 5W-30 Motor Oil in the "Oil" Side Motor oil makes a very poor firearm lubricant. It is way "too thick," (regardless of the "weight) is not designed to lubricate and protect as is machine oil, collects dirt and debris rapidly, and is generally used as a last resort only. You have NOTHING other than motor oil? OK, better than nothing. However you are better off (if you can't find or purchase "Gun Oil") with "3in1 Oil," or WD40, or any other light machine oil. Would it be possible to make it even better and change the Russian words you have there to the actual Russian words with the correct font? "нефть" is the Russian word for "oil" and "щелочное" is the Russian word for "alkaline" Those special Russian characters show up in these messages we post, but would they work in the software you are using on the picture?? Posts: 7449 May 9 10 7:35 AM Veteran member Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	More rifles have had barrel damage due to improper cleaning than rounds fired thru them. If you look at some rifles that have been cleaned a lot, the muzzle is no longer perfectly round. It is worn into an enlongated shape from the cleaning rod rubbing on the inside of the muzzle. A hardened cleaning rod or one that is segmented and the parts screw together is just like a file when it enters the bore. That is why a rifle should always be cleaned from the receiver end if it is possible. The crown of the muzzle is very important to accuracy and any wear at the crown will make the propelling gasses impart forces on the bullet that are not exactly inline with the bore and the bullet will be skewed in weird directions. The muzzle protector simply keeps the cleaning rod centered in the bore, so it does not contact the metal itself to cause wear. Curt

It has been my good fortune to have made acquaintance with one "Branko Bogdanovic" in Serbia. For those who may not know of him, he is the author of the book, "Serbian & Yugoslav Mauser rifles," is the historian for Zastva the primary Yugosla arms works in Kragujevac, Serbia and a researcher for the Military Museum in Belgrade. He is also quite familiar with Mosins particularly where they concern Yugo service. I had posed this question of content of the oilers to him previously. He was also and officer in the Yugo army in the 1970s. His reply... Yugo Cold War rifle cleaning equipment, fluids. [concerning two sided oilers-] "Well, you see, oiler M48 have a two section: in one is cleaning detergent, in second - oil for protection (conservation). After shooting, solider immediately cleaning bore with detergent DM-C (DM = detergent for metal; Č with apostroph or CH = čišćenje or cleaning). DM-C is 2% solution of detergent in water. After ''washing'' and cleaning, soldier must grease or oil bores. New pattern of oiler (M56) have only one section for universal ZUON (general purpose protection oil). [I had written my friend about these and made reference to the familiar oiler often seen suspended from the slings of sks rifles.] What is ''banjo'' oiler? You have two models (see in my book) - M48 and M56. In both case, oiler is in bag (with cleaning rope, bore brush and guide cap). Field Cleaning Kit is in one of ammo pouch or in soldier small bag. But, oiler M56 for submachinegun M56 have a small leather pouch. This small pouch for oiler is supposed to go on strap for magazines pouch. But, if is oiler M56 part of cleaning kit for Mauser M48, it is still in ammo pouch or bag. In practice and in regulations from 1949, 1960 and 1969, oiler is never on the sling! I remember, in action, my soldiers never carried oiler as though there was always oil strainer varnish. ''Oil strainer varnish'' (used motor oil)- dirty, soiled and I know, not practical, but it is what was done." I hope this info may have been of some interest. Easy oil to see and easy to see it on the weapon ! Why not ? Who gives a damn when you are being shot at, what your weapon looks like ! Just so it works w/o any problems ! Detergent is a generic term. Probably was Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate - the "universal Detergent" made everywhere. Typical powdered laundry detergent. Corrosive and alkaline as hell. That's why powdered laundry detergent feels slippery when wetted on your hands. Like lye. Will cut thru oil and grease like a knife and when rinsed off with water, is gone. The detergent's natural alkalinity would neutralize the acid from the primers and powder. Follow up with used motor oil..... Cheap and available anywhere. Nice. Posts: 850 Jul 3 10 8:31 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I have used leftover CLEAN motor oil on my 75 or so Mosin rifles for the last 30 years in pretty humid Georgia. I'm one of those anal retentive weirdoes who changes his own oil. I've never had any rust problems. Yes it is thicker than regular gun oil and if you're going walrus hunting in January you probably need something else. My Russian and Finnish rifles are a rather rough bunch and they really don't like sissy gun oils.

It's the heavy application of excess oil, whatever kind, that attracts and holds dust, which in turn draws moisture, that allows rust. Lightly does it is the key more than the grade of oil. Posts: 20 Aug 7 10 9:13 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	OK, I know that it may be "bad form" to reply to such an old post, but with regards to the oil, after using Rem oil, Hoppes, and all of that, I went back to the old tried and true GI classic. Singer sewing machine oil seems to be plenty light, defies "gooping" since a sewing machine is a lint laden goop factory all by itself, and runs so hot and fast that it would churn lesser oils into sludge. Find the local Singer dealer (NOT a chain store, get the genuine article) in the Yellow Pages, and stock up. My semi's seem to love it even in the depth on a WNY winter.

If you want an oil that is transparent and is made for conditions of ANY sort, why not pick a grade of simple MOTOR OIL for an automobile ? You couldn't have worse conditions in an Automobile Engine, except maybe inside a Volcano! There are grades of Motor Oil from very thin to very thick - pick whatever rings your bell - for cheap ! Max at $5 a QUART ! There is even very thick and sticky 90 weight TRANSMISSION oil. If the Russians have employed USED Motor Oil, then new oil would be fine. Add some STP if you want it to be sticky, also.... Why pay $$$ for a few ounces of some Brand Name ? I know...don't rock the boat. Don't move outside the line. Follow orders ! Posts: 392 May 29 11 11:51 AM Veteran member Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	ATF, originally whale oil was used in automatic tranmissions, it doesn't gum, it's lightweight, doesn't go rancid, was about the best that was around until it was banned. todays ATF is more or less artificial whale oil. I have been using it for many years. also have a bottle of real whale oil that is almost 50 years old. not gummy or rancid. BTW WD-40 is not a lubricant. it is water displacement formula number 40. TTC
