I was just given a bayonet.... and must confess that I know nothing about them..... I did a bunch of searching online and am pretty sure I have a 1886 French Lebel bayonet and metal sheath. It has a cruciform blade and is 20 1/2" long. 25 1/4 OAL.
It is in nice shape, but the sheath has a fair amount of rust, as well as light surface rust on the cross piece of the bayonet. I am thinking of oiling the rusted areas and (maybe) a light going over with a scotch brite pad.....
Is this a bad idea? Would I be better off leaving it alone? Also my bayonet has what appeared to be a brass handle, not the silver (Alloy?) material I have found online.....
