Replacement Firing Pins?

After numerous attempts at searching the internet, I have not been able to locate a gunsmith that is able to make firing pins for obsolete 19th century firearms. My 'Googling' abilities leave something to be desired, I guess! Specifically, I need a new firing pin for my 1867 Werndl rifle and have the broken original for a guide. Has anyone out there sought a good 'smith for this particular service? If so, would you please share contact info? Thank you. Cheers! Posts: 410 Apr 24 11 11:25 AM active member Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Finding a replacement original would be extremely unlikely and nobody makes reproductions for the less common rifles, such as the Werndl. FWIW most replacements are made by hobby machinists. The Werndl is not one of the hardest to make, but not the easiest either. If you have a friend with one of the mini lathes, he might be willing to have a go at it. You start with drill rod stock of the maximum diameter of the pin and work down from there. You are ahead of the game by having the broken old one to copy (reverse engineering pins is a pain). You don’t say exactly how the old one is broken, so I wouldn’t discount someone being able to braze it back together either. Making replacement parts such as strikers and such is time consuming work that most gunsmiths run from. Not because they can’t do it, but a customer willing to pay for the time involved would be rarer than the part itself. Two or three hours work shaping, fitting and hardening a custom made part translates to pushing $150 or more in shop time.

Posts: 59 Apr 24 11 6:24 PM active member Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	If you have access to someone with a lathe. Have him face it off and drill it to accept a pin. you could use the shank of an old drill. soft solder it in and grind it to length and you should be good to go.

Posts: 2016 Apr 25 11 9:57 AM Veteran member Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Before altering the broken pin in any way, I'd get a full set of dimensions off of it, and make a good working drawing, so that if anything doesn't come out right in the modification/repair, you have the needed master information to "see" where the problem is.
