Here is the Kar98 I picked up at at a small Gun Show a few weeks ago. It is my first Mauser and first rifle actually. I plan on using it for reenacting mostly. It is dated 1938 and marked 147. Only one Nazi eagle is intact, the others seem to be worn away. The other parts don't have matching numbers. The stock is numbered 9938 and matches the buttplate. The buttplate says bpr 41. The stock does have the reciever seriel stamped on the butt but I am guessing that was added post-war or possibly a during a war-time refurbish. I got it for $360, $380 with tax. I offered lower but he wouldn't go. Anyhow comments are welcome.
I've since cleaned the stock up with some paint thinner/mineral spirits. Still need to thoroughly clean the internals.
