There may still be a few rounds buried under Bannerman's castle.

Seriously, any remaining surplus is surely in the hands of cartridge collectors.

I have some ammo headstamped "W.R.A..30 ARMY". I used to have some headstamped "UMC .30 ARMY". Those are as close as you're likely to come to surplus .30-40.

I've been to Bannerman's, and I can assure you there is nothing there. What I would give to have been able to poke around there 70 years ago! I doubt there has been any surplus Krag ammo available for decades.

If you are going to shoot 30:40 Krag, you have 2 options. Reload or pay deep in the pockets for commercial ammo on line. If you want a box or two original stuff for display, they can be found on line. This old stuff though is unreliable shooting ammo, having it's share of duds, hangfires or split cases, and cost will be more than the commercial stuff. My recommendation is to reload and buy as many cases as you can. They are getting hard to find at times also.

You can find .30-40 online for under $30 not really any more than a box of commercial 30-06.

I might add that when shooting a rifle as old as a Krag, it's often prudent to use commercial ammo or handloads that are on the lighter end of the power spectrum - especially if you are shooting a rifle that has a high collector value.
