So I have an 1898 model Krag that the stock was irreparably cracked when I took posession of it. I determined to inlet a new stock for it, and so I ordered one up from Boyd's. Now I've never inlet a stock before, and while I have RE-finished a number of them, since I've never started from scratch, I've never FINISHED a stock before I've managed to inlet the stock (right now I am forgoing a handguard), and until last night it was just a smooth hunk of extremely blonde walnut wood. Now, for the record, as this was my first time to do this, I did purchase a 2nd quality stock from Boyd's, because I KNEW I'd hose it up at times, and sure enough, my hand was unsteady with the dremel at times and I put some gouges where I might have preferred not to. Anyways, the thing will be functional and safe, even though not perfect. Last night was the big night! The stock fits perfectly, and I was all ready to apply finish. I wiped it down with some mineral spirits, let it dry, and then hit it with a coat of 50-50 of Pure Tung Oil and a Natural Citrus Solvent. The transformation was magical. What had been a cold piece of white wood became a warm piece of beautiful brown wood, with grain that was amazing to behold. I'll put a second coat on tonight, and maybe a couple more before I'm done. I will eventually post pictures of the completed rifle, but for now, I just needed to express how amazing the wood looks, and I can't wait to complete my project and get this old warhorse out to the range!

If your going to have a go at inleting a stock from scratch learn from the master

There will be no "from scratch" for me, starting with a semi inlet was plenty of fun for me!

id need one fully inlet - you are a better man than me - good luck

I got this thing to the range today. My first time shooting it, or any Krag, or anything in 30-40.

It's been awhile since I've shot one, but I believe the recoil is about par with a M1 Garand, and markedly less than a M1903.

OOoohhhh! That looks very nice! I'm down to 5 milsurps now. One's a Krag, and it's still the one I shoot best with.
