Posts: 101 Aug 2 06 3:30 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Tags : None I just checked a popular seller on the web for a 100% correct Colt 1911A1. I found one and it's listed as SOLD. The description was excellent bore, excellent condition and excellent grips and had a matching slide. The price was $3,250! I can't believe the price. This must be one of those "once-in-awhile" prices....right?

And I can shoot it all I want without having to worry about putting a ding, scratch or crack on a $2000+ WWII era 1911A1. If it makes someone feel better, the SA pistols will take GI parts, so you can put High Standard GI barrels in them, or whatever else floats your boat They are made by Imbel in Itajuba(sp) Brazil. Don't let that fool you, Imbel makes really good firearms and the steel is of a very high grade. These pistols are considered superior to other 1911 "clones" in the same range, such as Auto-Ordnance. The Brazilian military uses a 1911-based pistol in 9mm, also made at Imbel. It's on their website.

Posts: 5590 Aug 8 06 3:49 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I put a 20# Wolff recoil spring in my SA 1911, and also ordered 10 Springfield 7-shot mags marked "made in Italy" at Numrich for $6 each. Great mags, made of very heavy steel and good followers. The junk mags I paid $5 each for lasted about 4 or 5 loadings and rounds started popping out the top. VERY cheap and thin followers, and thin mag bodies. I left them on the ground at the range, maybe someone can use the springs....... The 20# spring makes the gun feel ALOT better and more positive during shooting. The stock 16# feels like it lets the slide whip back too much. Standard .45 ammo had enough power to cycle the 20# spring, but I wouldn't go to a 24#. It also makes feeding very positive. I also added a "Shok-Buf" buffer. These wear out every 1000 rounds or so.

Posts: 5025 Aug 8 06 11:46 AM Host Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Good advice about buying a 1911A1 repro to bang away with but don't loose sight of the fact that 100% correct and unmessed with WW2 Colts are a very desirable collectors item many would love to own. If I owned it I wouldn't shoot it much so I wouldn't crack a slide or anything. Owning a collectors piece like this is heresy to many on these forums who insist on shooting everything they own so this wouldn't be the gun for them. This is comparing apples to oranges though.

Posts: 5025 Aug 9 06 11:51 AM Host Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I have a WW2 Remington Rand for collecting purposes but my "shooter" is a Colt 70 series Government Model. The newer clones make great shooters and I'd advise owning one to save the collectors from abuse.

Posts: 5590 Aug 10 06 1:54 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I can get the exact same fun and shooting experience from shooting a "repro/clone" of the GI .45, and for $350 used there's no reason not to pick one up. The shop near me had a used Auto-Ordnance 1911A1 GI repro. Someone picked that one up. Semi-auto pistols are always kind of dicy for me, as far as buying expensive original pistols. Because I like to shoot, and sooner or later something is going to need replacing like springs or whatever.........so then comes the dilemma of replacing a USGI spring, and making the gun less than 100% original. I prefer not to worry about these thing, and I just like to shoot!

I saw one today and the only reason I wasn't very tempted was because I already have 3 1911s and I don't need another "beater" .45. (I have a rare functional AO for that)

Quality control and steel quality seem to be better, and they are made at Imbel, which is known for making quality firearms for the Brazilian military and possibly others. In fact, the sidearm of the Brazilian military is a 1911-based pistol in 9x19mm. So, the SA 1911A1's are likely made to the same standards and are produced by professional arsenal workers who know what they are doing. To my knowledge, the Rock Island pistols are made in the Phillipines......I don't know anything about Phillipino gun makers. I'm sure the Rock Island .45's are decent enough for range use, but QC may not be as consistent. I think Rock Island guns are no longer made, according to SARCO, so maybe it's for a reason? Springfield Armory is a popular gun retailer, and their XD pistols made in Croatia are pretty good sellers. SA has a reputation to protect, and in a gun market awash in 1911A1 clones they don't want to be selling substandard firearms.

Posts: 433 Oct 18 06 2:45 PM active member Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Brazil got a lot of help after WWII from a little outfit in Germany called KRUP, who was looking for new business opportunities since the war ended and their Tiger Tank armor contract was cancelled abruptly by the Allies. KRUP is to Germany what US Steel is to the US and they helped the Brazilians start their steel industry right. Hence I have no worries about the quality of forged Brazilian steel.

Posts: 895 Nov 1 06 11:15 AM Veteran member Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I have a Colt 1911A1 that is a WWII gun the inspector mark GHD and is marked United States Property, 1911A1, US Army. The gun is in nice condition the park turned green long ago. The only problem I see is the front of the slide is a different color park, I guess that they may have replaced the front sight and just dipped the front part of the slide. I have been shooting this pistol for forty years, not every day but I do shoot it. I guess I need to stop. I paid the princely sum of eighty dollars for it, I guess that I could double my investmen now. The gun show I bought it at had a table of .30 caliber Lugers for three for a hundred dollars, but I had just bought a 9mm Luger for twenty eight dollars. Eighty dollars was a lot of money then, you could fill your back seat up with grocery's for twenty bucks.

Posts: 5025 Nov 1 06 5:29 PM Host Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	As I understand the dark front end of the slide phenomenom, the front ends and slide stop notches were heat treated to harden them. The darker effect is ususually more noticable and pronounced in reparkerized guns and not as noticable in original finish guns. Don't ask me why. Yes, zaxxon, I will take your offer to double your money or triple your money.

There is a certain satisfaction in owning and preserving a piece of history which can't be duplicated by owning a clone or repro. But clones and repros. have their place if you want to shoot the heck out of them.

Posts: 8 Dec 25 06 6:44 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	the only real collector pieces i have i lucked into & the only way i would buy any 1911 made after 1970 is if it were very cheap & then it would be traded or sold as soon as posible. for the money you pay for any of the new 45's you can find a refinished or shooter grade usgi or early commercial 1911 & it will continue to go up in value, unlike the new guns. i consider my guns investments that shoot.
