Gew88 parts by serial database attempt ? |
Lead | |
|
Guys - with all the small to total part mismatch gew88's out there why can't we start a database for such parts. We could potentially restore many of our old smokepoles !.For example I got a all major parts matching 1890 Lowe 88 today. And the only other 88 there when it walked in I got for $135.I got the rod off of it , and the front action screw matched the 1890 lowe I just got !!!.And to top it off the rear screw matched another 88 I had that needed same !!. Pure dumb luck...but we could change those odds for the better.
C'mon let's do this !!. |

I would consider helping with this, but I want to see input from all who frequent here. Unit markings would be a good thing to capture as well.
Ok guys, talk it up, and let's make a decision. take care, Keep your powder Dry!!

The 4 88's I have for sale are so covered with cosmoline,
I don't want to touch them to look for numbers.. Sorry. I used the rear sight off one to replace the one on my keeper rifle. Had the same last two digits. I got lucky too. Funny part, it was the only non-matching number on my gun too. |

Serial # database/matching service

AMEN!
I've thought this was a great idea for a long time. I've mentioned in prior posts how the Mauser guys have done serial number databasing but unsure of how they formatted it. I think it was some kind of hosted link. I'm the most excited about the possibility of finding my bolts somewhere out there! It seems superflous to me to try to match receiver bolts when the bolt is mismatched. If I got some rec/bolt matches I'd start moving heaven and earth for the small stuff. If you can bolt body match any of my recievers, I will swap the mismatch with you plus the going price of an average bolt plus premium. Same goes if I can match my bolts to your gun[s]. Here's my reciever numbers.... 9974f.......2829u......14s........6651d........8421t.....8149c......2963n......4433h......57t..... bolts available 5367t......8634l......7825e......9282.......[majority of my bolt bodies are Arabiked, impossible to match or type!] Also would be nifty to match Regimental marks. Trade plus premium if you have any of these. [Last #, gun/rack #, unimportant] 5.R.R.12.2.......B.11.R.2.167.....2.R.J.2.114...10.R.11.114......3.GR.E.3.70......B.J.1.3.....26.R.4.56 If this is the only format we can make work [a standard post on the board] let's try it, and make sure it gets "header/lead" status! Happy Gewehr'ing, All! GF |

matching Gewehrs | ||

Point[s] well taken, sir!
What's your take on why or how all the bolt bodies matched to the recievers at the arsenals disappeared? Were the rifles "demilled" or something silly like that after WW1 by chucking the bolts? How did the Turks get in on Germany's "war booty" and/or reparations in arms if they were on Germany's side? My main hope for a bolt match is from the Gibbs/Ecaudor stuff. My feeling is that these guns were probably shipped/recieved intact in the 1920's and just got swapped around by jungle armorers and that's how they shipped to us mismatched. Might have even been matched up to present day but were stripped to ease shipment by Gibbs who just threw them back together willy nilly when and/as they shipped from them to us["Got anuther one'a them rusty 'mausers' goin'out. Throw me a bolt from that pile!"] I know that if I get a bolt body match to my recievers it will be from a guy who bought one of the Gibbs guns. I know they're out there, I'm keeping the faith! GF |

......thanks for your response, yes, I should have known that the Turks got their 88's before the war, that makes sense. Yes, the odds for a bolt match are astronomical, but not impossible if enough guys get involved! I think about the fact that some SN's may be redundant from arsenal to arsenal, i.e., there may exsist a Spandau 6651 as well as an Amberg 6651. Also, most of my SN's have a letter suffix, which I assume refers to a production block, i.e. a 6651"t" may have a 6651"v" out there that was produced in a different month or even year. Ever the optimist!
Speaking of arsenals, I will be off the board for three weeks next week for a Reise to the Old Country. A relative here in the States was stationed in Germany in the army in a Hawk missle battery in the 1970's in the Amberg area and wants me to try to visit there to see if a famous family crystal factory is still there and if so to pick him up a few geegaws. I will of course have an eye peeled for old iron and want to also see if the old Amberg arsenal is still there. If so, will be sure to post photos when I return. Regards, all.... GF |

Have to trade:
Front band: 98.R.2.110 #49 also has 89 crossed out. Rear Band: 37.R.3.7. #20 Magazine: 2750 W, no dust cover. Nice patina and no rust or pitting. rear sight leaf: #53 I recently bought a barreled action (Danzig 1890) and stock and need parts to complete. The receiver is #3595t. I need front and rear action screws, complete bolt, rear sight slide, rear sight base screw and cleaning rod. The only Gew 88 parts I have for trade are listed above. I do have some Gew 98 parts I'd be willing to trade for the parts I need. I can provide photos of any of the above upon request. |

Re: Gew88 parts by serial database attempt ?

Gewehrdork.....sorry for my late response. Upon closer examination of the sight leaf it appears that it may have been modified (Turks or Bubba?). The base of the sight leaf looks as if it dished out, with the 4 digit serial number partially removed. It looks like it is 4953 but I'll post a couple of pix so you can see for yourself.

Re: Gew88 parts by serial database attempt ?

Oh well it would have worked somewhat. It may be a german recalibration of the rear sight leaf as the turk examples I have all seen were rather more crude and I think were in arabic too. It looks like the V notch was removed from the flip sight and the top of the leaf too.

Re: Gew88 parts by serial database attempt ?

I need a bit of help on this one.
Why do some people only have 2 digits for some parts? Are there numbers not added? Where are the unit numbers? I'll go back and check my parts better. For now. I got this Gew 88 last night from Centerfire. Receiver - 4575 1890 date? straight bar type Bolt - no head 4990 Stock - 1232 Trigger guard - 1332 Center band 2887 Barrel - brand spanking new (looking - no use marks)! No joking either, armorer didn't even tighten it before it went into storage. My Kar 88 - will get the other numbers tonight. flat spoon type Bolt - 7080 |
