On a frigid Saturday morning we gathered at the Leeds rifle range in Sunny but cold South Carolina for the first inaugural Winter War Shoot!
Due to the recent weather and current temperatures, we were only expecting 8-10 shooters. Surprisingly, we got about twice that amount!
Festivities began with an accuracy shoot at 100 yds. Two targets were placed and one was shot for grouping, the other for score. Following that, we broke for a sumptuous feast provided by our very own Wallbanger. A tasty beef stew had been simmering all morning intoxicating us with its aroma. It tasted as good as it smelled. Kudos to Art!

MMMMM yummy!

Then we resumed shooting with a "speed" round. We were only allowed to use a single rifle (the same one we shot during the accuracy portion) for the entire competition. Each shooter had a paper plate placed at the 25 yd. berm. The object was to fire 10 rds at the plate in as little time as possible. Now the catch: The shooter had to relaod once during the leg. With Art on the stopwatch the shooting commenced. No one lost a finger, or bruised anything, I don't think. (As an aside-I was shooting a bolt gun, a Remington 1903A3 in .30-06, somewhat of a disadvantage as compared to some people who will remain nameless and shot a light recoiling Swede autoloader...but I digress!
)
The Art set about tallying up the scores. While he did that we let loose with all we had. Auto loaders came out (CETMES, FALS, SKS's, Ljungmans, M-1's, etc, even a Remington Model 8 in .35!), as well as some fine bolt guns-Swede Mausers, Persian Mausers, Chilean Mausers, Mosin Nagants, Enfields, and more!
Even a few pistolas appeared A brace or Walthers (PP & P-38 respectively) and an Inglis.
Here's some shooting action-

Then it was time to name a winner. This was a blanket match. Each shooter brought an item of about $10 value to be tossed on the table as a prize. The items were then selected off the table in the order that the contestants finished-the top finisher got 1st pic, 2nd got #2, and so on. After much tabulation, it was determined that....**DRUMROLL PLEASE** The winner was...OUR FEARLESS LEADER...PARALLAX BILL!!!! (yeah, we figured it was rigged too!) [oh yeah...I didn't finish last! Actualy finished in the top half!]
Oh yeah, almost forgot...the club was running CMP qualification again. Several members took part. And Francis' wife Kate was shooting at the range too, though she didn't shoot in the competition...Bill had better be glad she didn't...she'd have smoked him! The lady is good!
All in all it was a great event. Once again, thanks to Art & Wayne for pulling it all together. I'm sure Art will be on later with details & match results, and Bill should have some pictures to post.
and now a few more photos-

The Winner!

We told Chris he couldn't shoot Bill's sniper unless he wore this hat!

NEWS FLASH-Francis to sell off Mauser, Luger, & Radom collections...Will now focus on 7.62 Semi-Auto Main Battle Rifles...film at 11!

Francis caught in mid-chest thump after loosing 20 rds. down range in rapid fire...He was heard to exclaim "Mauser? What's a Mauser?!!!"
Here's a link to about 30 or so pix from todays event...enjoy...we sure did!
