Posts: 763 Nov 8 01 5:00 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Veteran's day has had at least one other title that I know of. When I was a kid it was often refered to as Armistice Day, celebrating the end of WWI (11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month). I remember the old guys on the corner handing out red paper poppies. Someplace along the way it turned into Veteran's day, a day to remember and salute those that have served in our military. I for one have always found it a good day, with a good excuse to get . . .drunk. I only do this to toast my fellow comrades in arms that have gone before me and after my service. War is never beautiful and often not worth the cost (presently I may need to modify this feeling over the current situation), but our Veterans are beautiful and priceless.

Posts: 257 Nov 9 01 8:05 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Being a veteran usally means to many people the memory of being in the mindset of realizing that death can come, and having to live with it and live moment to moment, with a little eye for a possible future, if survival is achieved successfully, at least it was for me in West Germany(Germany united while I was there too) and the Gulf War. Germany duty meant the constant threat of the Soviet horde, and chemical, biological, and nuclear attacks that could have happened, and for me the time I almost died of cold exposure due to someone elses incompetance(lucky to be here, really). The Gulf War duty meant doing my duty mostly away from the front lines repairing equipment and tagged for more dangerous log base security force and other dangerous jobs that could have left me dead, like having to help remove/check for booby traps equipment of interest(never volunteer for anything). Being a veteran makes me remember a windy guard duty night on the compound entrance, alone that time, listening to the the wind make howling noises, seeing flashes of light up north that meant many were dying that opposed us, and wondering if the many dead were not part of the wind swirling and taunting me on their way down the last road on the way to the afterlife. While being a civilian means usually knowing someone else is having to take the risks, and I am not knocking that, of course.
