Hi all

Does anyone know the velocity of yugo 8x57mm ammo with 198 grain projectile?

Reason I ask is, I have been using 175 grain projectiles in my M48a and was surprised when the impact point was about 4 inches higher than I expected, I surmised that the Yugo ammo must have had a heavier projectile than the 150grain round the germans used. So after seaching this forum I found a post that said the Yugo's used a 198 grain projectile which I found very interesting.

Jason, Yugos have 198 gr. bullets at about 24-2500 FPS. It is very normal for heavier bullets to shoot higher than lightet, faster loads. Rich P

M75Sniper-same bullet weight, 720m/s +-8 at 25M
Silencer round-310M/s +-10 at 25M.bullet 15.60 g.

Didn't the Germans switch to the 198gr bullet for infantry rifles well before WWII started? I think they only used the lighter 154gr bullet for rifles in the First World War and used the 198gr bullet for machineguns. Then in the 1930's they went with the 198gr bullet for all 7.92x57 ammo.

All of the German P codes from 1934 thru 1940 that I got from J&G a few years ago is brass cased 198 grain.

I'll edit this to make it more clear.
WW11 started in 1939 with the invasion of Poland IIFC.
Not counting Hitlere taking the Studenten land earlier. Again I dind't look up the exact dates, but that is pretty close.

Since the P coded ammo is from 1934 to 1940, at least this batch was. That would make the change over to 198 grain bullet, way before the WW11 started.

Some of it is the most accurate Milsurp ever. Not debatable.

It chronoed around 2500 give or take. There were at least ten different P codes which donates the mfg. All of it is 196 grain. Also the design and machining of the bullet is far superior to any other 8mm I have seen.
I haven't seen it all for sure, but we have tested pretty near everything that has been available in the last few years.

There was a lot of input about FNM Port. 8mm being exc. in accuracy, but from our tests it is not as good as Yugo from the seventies or newer, excluding 81 steel cased stuff which had flyers, and not as good as some German P codes. We tested extensively. Many trials and many Mausers.

This is some info. off the top of my head without looking up details.

Yugo 8mm 198 grain chronoed around 2500 also. That is the stuff from the early fifties.

Some of the Turk ammo has around a 150 grain bullet and chronoed at 2900 to 3200.

I can't remember right now what the Turk 196 grain chronoed at.
Same with the around 154 grain Romanian. Which is loaded light and puny in comparison to other 8mm.

Also Turk LB ammo has a hefty recoil (hot) and will print about six inches lower than HB Yugo ammo at around 100 yds.

Hi All

Thanks for the replies guys, the information is very interesting.

Highland make a 198grain FMJBT projectile that I will load and shoot in military shoots.
Unfortunately any 8mm milsurp ammo is very hard to get over here

Back in April a friend and I chrony'ed some of the Yugo Ammo. Chrony was about 10 feet in front of the muzzle and was not moved between tests. Each group was 10 shots.

First batch was from a 900 round case, brown box, no strippers with box markings of PPU M49 7681 and head stamp of PPU 1977.

Min Velocity 2412
Ave Velocity 2456
Max Velocity 2497
Std Dev 24
Spread 85

Second batch was from a delinked machine gun belt, PPU 1982 headstamp.

Min Velocity 2446
Ave Velocity 2493
Max Velocity 2515
Std Dev 18
Spread 69

This also gives a nice confirmation that the machine gun ammo isn't hotter than the regular ammo. Difference in the average velocity is on order of 2% and when you plot the individual shots the two sets of data overlap.

Those figures are very close to what we found also.

Seventies or newer Yugo 8mm used two different types of powder that I am aware of.

All of the seventies or newer, with the exception of 81 steel cased, chronoed pretty much the same. 2500 give or take.

Also on a side note.
Early 50s Yugo used at least three different powders, without much variation in velocity. However one type of powder seemed to be much more accurate. There are other variables that could account for this.

When we used components of the early fifties Yugo to re load to Hirtenber brass. We used the powder "Unique" translated from the long word on the front of the box, almost exclusively, because it seemed to be more consistant.

Long before we started to use the powder and components to reload in non corrosive brass and primers, we noticed quite a bit of difference in accuracy of the early fifties Yugo. After much testing, we concluded it was the difference in powder.

Both factories used the variations of powder, both 11 and factory 12. Which is now PP I believe.

This is just for interest for those contemplating re loading the Yugo 8mm from the early fifties that had the recessed primers.

Maybe 3 years ago going from memory, a gent called SC Closer tested and posted Chrono results on this or another forum.
He did some 70s Yugo, and best I recall his results were about in line with nvshooters. Just shy of 2500 fps plus or minus.

I have some Wolf Gold performance ammunition 8mm 196 gr. SP, NNY (PPU) head stamp. (Recent production.)
IIRC I found ballistics info on the Wolf site that indicated very similar velocities. Was pleasantly surprised that they appeared to use a relatively full load, unlike the milder domestic versions.
The specs are probably still on the Wolf site? Privi Partizan also has a site, with ballistics info. They list multiple versions for Mauser 8mm and 8x57 JS IIRC. I think both companies can be found with Google.

Yeah, isn't it pathetic what the U.S. ammo makers load their 8mm Mauser rounds to just for liability reasons. How many of the old .318" bore rifles are still being shot anyway? A friend, who has since passed away, loaded some with Hornady components right out of the Hornady book and we were lucky to get 2340 fps out of them with 180 grain bullets.
