I was wondering if any other board members were familiar with that area to swap tales with?

Anyone fish Vilas County, Wisconsin? |

I live in southern Indiana, and try to make a trip each spring to northern Wisconsin. We stay in St. Germain, and fish various lakes in Vilas and Oneida counties.

Yes, I fish in Vilas County! My in-laws live in Eagle River and my folks had a summer place on Little St. Germain for many years. I have it good as my
father-in-law was a guide and specialized in muskie fishing. We fish many of the lakes and have had great day on North Twin and Lac Vieux Desert. We
primarily fish for muskies and walleyes. I'm looking forward to getting up there Memorial Day to get my boat out and do some fishing.

Hi, Slick-
We usually fish smaller lakes than the ones you named. Fished Little St. Germain a few times, Lake Content, Pickerel Lake over in Oneida Co., and a few others. We've driven through Eagle River on the way to Kentuck Lake, but never made it up to the Desert. We fish for walleye, bass, and northerns. Usually try a day of crappie fishing, too. I'll be heading out Friday for this year's trip, and musky season won't be open until a week after I'm back home. We have stumbled on a few muskies by accident, best one was 38" back in 2005. |

We also hit a bunch of the little lakes also. We fish Escanaba, Razerback over in the Sayner area along with Plum Lake. We have also had good success on the
Eagle River chain (Catfish, Cranberry, Duck Lakes) and the Wisconsin River for walleys. We do fish around Boulder Junction and up around Land o' Lakes.
Back in March, my brother-in-law was catching some nice walleye and perch though the ice. Vilas county also has a nice shooting range that is just North of
Eagle River to put a few down range if you get the chance. Hope you have a fantastic trip!

Made it back Saturday after a week of fishing up there. The two of us caught 282 fish, almost all northerns, with a few bass mixed in. I managed to get a
treble hook stuck in the heel of my hand when a struggling pike tossed the lure at me. Had to do the "Pull the barb through and cut it off" routine.
I bled like a stuck pig, unusual for a puncture wound.
Sure beat working. |

I'm heading up today for a week. I'll let you know how we did and maybe even post a couple of pics! Sorry to hear about the hook in the hand! I have
done that myself. Sounds like you had a great trip! It definitely beats working!

Well, I finally have a chance to post about our week in Eagle River. We were up for a week starting Memorial Day weekend. We didn't get to fish the
weekend as we were up at our hunting cabin putting in food plots. It got cold going from the mid 70's to the upper 40's on Monday so we had no luck
with the walleyes. Had rain Tues and Wed and had little luck again on the walleyes. The spouses took care of Thurs, Fri, and Sat so we didn't get out for
any fishing. Sunday we went down to Thunder Lake in Three Lakes and caught 50 nice crappies in about 2 hours between 4 of us. More rain moved in and the
crappies shutoff so we when home to clean fish and have a nice fish fry! Packed up the boat and car and headed home on Mon. It was great to get away from
work and just have some down time. On one the the spouse days, my wife and I got out to the range and shot some. My wife shot her new Rem 597 which she was
shooting dime sized groups at 25 yrds. I got my 597 and AR15 out for a little work. We had a great time!
As you said it sure beats working! |

I've been waiting for your update. Sorry to hear the weather crapped out on you.
The crappie spawn up there is just amazing. They nest so shallow in some lakes that you can cruise with your trolling motor and literally choose the fish you want. I'm glad you had a good trip and got home safe. Another question- have you ever fished Franklin Lake over in Forest County? On the last day of our trip, a local told us about it, said it was a great place for big pike, but we didn't have time left to go. |

There not much you can do about the weather. It's still great to get out on a lake and fish. Catching is just a bonus for me! I have not fished on
Franklin Lake. Sound like someplace to investigate the next time I'm up there. I'll ask my father-in-law what he has heard about it and let you know.

Thanks, Slick.
I agree about catching is just a bonus. I love the scenery up there. At one time this trip, I counted 7 bald eagles over the lake at the same time. Keep in touch |

When my parents had their place on Little St. Germain, they had a nesting pair of bald eagles on the property. They have a picture of a hatchling after it
tried it's first flight and bounced off the roof and landed on the pouch. I'll see if I can get the pic from my mother and scan and post! It's
great to see the eagles back up there in such numbers! I friend from up there just sent me a picture he took of a moose just south of Three Lakes. There have
been a few moose spotted in that area. Good to see some species moving back into the area.
