BG Paul Tibbets Died today |
Lead | |
|
Paul Tibbets, the pilot that flew the B29 Enola Gay on the first nuclear bombing mission in history, died today at the age of 92. He was a 30 year old
colonel in the Army Air Corps when he led the strike against Hiroshima. Interestingly, he stated that he did not want a funeral or headstone because he
feared that anti-war and anti-nuclear weapon groups that are critical of his most famous mission would use his death and gravesite for their protests. He has
been cremated and it is rumored that the ashes may be scattered over the British Channel.

A true passing from history.
It's a shame he had to fear for a resting place. He had nothing to do with the creation of that weapon or ushering in that age. What he did do was usher in the end of a war (that we did not start) that would have taken far more lives had it been allowed to drag on conventionally and in all likelihood the majority of those lives would have been Japanese. And I truly doubt they would enjoy the place they would occupy in today's world had it been allowed to drag on either. They'd still be making cheap junk marked "made in occupied Japan." (if they were lucky! )
RIP Col. Tibbets. You earned it! Diplomacy is the art of saying nice doggie until you can find a rock. Will Rogers |

What a fine man!I first met Gen Tibbets at a gun show seven years ago in Dallas. My wife wanted to vist with him, because her uncle was a crew member of that
historic flight.Captain William "Deke" Parsons was the weaponeer on board. He was with "the bomb" from the start,to the time that it hit its
target.Paul Tibbets was a true gentleman of the highest order. He made it very clear that this mission would never have taken place without the skills of his
crew, that he alone could not have done it.He belived in the right to bear arms 100 %.Our hobby of collecting, and restoreing old firearms was a noble
one.History must be preserved for generations to come.Truely, words cannot discribe a man like this! We,as Americans ,are greatly in dept to him.Think of all the
thousands of GI lives that were saved, from haveing to make a waterborn invasion of Japan! With the passing Gen Tibbets, the end of a historic chapter is
rapidly closeing upon us.Sadly, men of his caliber are very few and far between, something that this country desperately needs right now,but does not have!May
God bless this noble man,and grant him peace.
