You're also right in that it's great that these knowledgeable folks are so willing to freely share the fruits of their hard work. It doesn't hurt one bit to contact them once in a while and tell them so either! In talking to one publisher, he commented that they never fail to hear any gripe but words of praise are few and far between.
So if you enjoy or find a reference book accurate and/or well done, tell 'em so!
They really don't mind hearing about their errors either, but be specific... i.e., "The rifle described on pg.123 is actually a 2nd model XYZ... reference Smitty's book of blah blah... and Jones' encyclopedia of yada yada."
Then throw in some praise of what they've done right which is usually most of the book.
