"I then used a power sander to finish up a couple of places where the finish didn't turn loose."

Oh my. I attend that board, too, but fortunately not that specific one. I'll just let that lie. I can't save the world, ya know.
The dye part was just about the only thing I could agree with. I didn't read far enough to find out what finish he put on it, however. It hurt too much. Why, oh why do guys feel compelled to use oven cleaner. Oven Cleaner is just that......oven cleaner. Look, I've tried it to satisfy my curiosity and it doesn't work any better than the proper materials and it also has a tendency to damage the wood never mind expose you to a lot of bad odors. And as for the sander, well, that's a bit heavy handed. Forget about preserving any imprints or cartouches and you will loose the nice crisp edges, too. I'd have piped in, but as some of you might know, that board tends to attract a more "militant" type of "collector" and I'm not looking for a flame war. Let's just move along.....nothing to see here.

After the stain he uses wiping poly for a finish. I just don't care for the plastic look on the stocks of ex-military weapons.
Just wanted you guys to see what the other side is up to. Dennis Jenkins |

Just for health sake someone should at least tell them about DA. And further down, more amazing, he said this>
"If you are careful with the sanding, you don't remove any cartouches or change the shape of the stocks at all." Just leave them on little islands??? And he was
concerned about preserving the "original color."
The heck of it is everybody seemed to think it was the greatest thing since sliced bread.
As for the plastic look, that's what those guys are used to ain't it? Diplomacy is the art of saying nice doggie until you can find a rock. Will Rogers |

Oh my..... MY EYES.... MY POOR EYES...... I think I'll grab my Mosins and talk nice to them, they need to be loved, not violated. I like the rough shellac
finish on them and all the dings and scratches. They are war horses, not commercial rifles. Why can't people realize that. I cringe when I think of how
many rifles have lost all of their historic value because of harsh cleaners and power sanders.

As time goes by I am finding I have less and less patience for Bubba ... he may be related to Homo Sapiens but there's enough Cromag dude in there to make
him a breed apart.
