It is a pre 1893 Mauser. If it has a barrel sleeve like the Gewehr 88, it is a Belgian 1889. If not it may be one of several countries 1890 to 1891 Mausers.
They were used by Turkey and Argentina among others.

Now there's a lucky find, finally something good came out of all those junkers. Congratulations.

Try Springfield Sporters, Numerich and the auction boards for parts. Use Mauser M91, Argentine and Argentino in your search. Both SS and Numerich list bolts
and bolt parts but Numerich appears out of stock for complete bolts and stripped bolts but may have smaller parts. Caliber is probably 7.65x53. Is barrel 29
inches? Any other marks or symbols? Barrel may show caliber size stamp between rear sight and receiver. Barrel hand guard may be held on by two lengths of
copper wire. Fascinating find. Congratulations. Let us know what you do with it.

Mac,
I am in Alexandria VA too. If you would entertain a trade or sale, that sort of looks like a project that I would be interested in trying to fix. Alternatively, I might be able to help you find some parts. If interested, e-mail me at wcowardin@alionscience.com Bill

Well I have been cleaning the bore and its coming out very well frosted but quite strong rifling.It has some damage to the bottom of the stock I did glue the
loose piece back on but some little bit of wood was missing.After a go over with howards feed and wax on the stock you can see the fn cartouche front of the
TG.Stock actually looks decent.I have not and will not use anything but howards and kroil/brakefree on itIm thinking about fixing it i would need a rear site
bolt buttplate.

FN made M89 Belgian (7,65x53) | ||
|
The Rifle shown partially in the photos is a standard M1889 Belgian Mauser, made by FN and in calibre 7,65x53...although, some captured ones during WW I were
rechambered to 7,9mm (by the Germans) So if it came from OWS (ie, out of Equador) it could be in either calibre...given its rusty condition, it would make an
interesting repair project.
It may have more History than what first meets the eye. Belgium (FN) did not make these for export, as their contract arrangements were the production of M1889s exclusively for the Belgian Gov't.(FN, although set up by a "syndacat" of Liege Gunmakers, was financed by a German bank and Ludwig Loewe, the Machinery supplier, who eventually (under DWM) became virtually sole owners of FN till 1914.(or 1918, if you like). Nice find.... Regards, Doc AV. AV Ballistics. |
