What do you think happened with this rifle? Is it really a late-date Chatellerault, or did a Finnish armorer just get creative with stamps? I'm really at a loss to explain this one and would love to year your ideas.
Note the 2nd hole to the side of the recoil lug. 7.62x54R.net estimates that that feature was discontinued after 1893.

Here is the same number stamped on the barrel. Note that it was mis-stamped 1996 and re-stamped 1896 with an 8 over the original 9. Weiiiirrrd.
Very faint "Ч" mark on the right side of the tang, indicating Chatellerault manufacture.
