Local gun shop / firing range burned a while back. I heard today while at another store that the cause of the fire was someone shooting a .223 tracer round
into the rubber backstop.

That's pretty much stupidity. Our range burnt Feb 2007 from grass in front of the firing line being ignited by a burning patch from a muzzleloader and
fanned by high winds. Just bad luck.

Although our range is up in the mountains a bit and the ground is cleared and no grass or weeds growing, they keep it pretty well maintained, with spraying and
using a weed cutter along the berms and the sides to prevent any fires. The range is city owned, so our tax dollars pays for the maintenance and the range fees
charged offset these costs and also pay for improvements. The range has been there since 1922, so it is an old range but it is all modern and we got
electricity in two years ago, so we have lighting, coffee pot, and such. There has never been a fire at the range that was caused by shooters. We don't
like people shooting tracers when it is dry outside, as we have seen them bounce quite a distance after hitting something. A couple of times people went
forward to stomp out some smouldering weeds off to the side of the range and that is about the extent of any fires there.
Being that it is in the mountains and owned by the city, there has been talk in the past of closing it when the fire danger was extremely high in the late summer months, but so far they have never done any more than to discuss it as being a possibility. Several years ago, lightning hit up on the hill above the range and started a fire, and people who use the range were concerned a bit. But two days later, the fire was controlled and put out, so by the next weekend, things were back to normal. But with all the smoke in the area, it was very difficult to see the target stands at 100 yards and to do good shooting. Curt |
