Apparently the Syrian crests were also applied in Kragujevac. Branko's comment as to which crests were applied at Kragujevac,
"Only Indonesian and Syrian. But, in archives not contract with Syria and I don't know number of rifles.
Iraqi rifles were marked in factory near Baghdad. This factory was built by Yugoslavia for Kalashnikov production and many Serbian experts worked in this factory as instructors. But Iraqi workers never really learned make a Mauser or Kalashnikovs and factory is closed."
So presumably, the receiver rings were hardened after marking in Iraq. Not really sure about that one. I'll double check.
UPDATE 6/17 >
The above comment left the basic question of heat treating unanswered so I asked again. here's the rest.
... Yes, the Yugos built a factory in Baladruz, with thermical line for heat treating.
I'm still trying to get the answer to the basic question of whether the receivers were sent soft for Iraqi marking and hardening or what.
The answer is simple. The receivers were finished at Kragujevac but aren't so hard the Iraqis couldn't hammer their triangle into them, which they did. It's as simple as that.
Some days I feel denser than others.
