Gun Toting Monkeyboy |
Evil sporter question (sorry) |

Ok, I am not a bubba. Those of you who have read my threads before know this. But I am at my wit's end here. I have a receiver that I rescued from the
junk bin, and I have collected enough other parts to put together a rifle. But rather than turn it into a parts gun that only looks like a real Gew 88, I
wanted to make a replica of one of the german sporting rifles built on this action at the turn of the last century. I can find all of the parts except a scope
mount. And at this point I would be happy with even a modern(ish) one that lets me still load the clip into the action. Does anybody have any ideas? The
only thing I have found it a $500+ mount from Germany that would get me clubbed to death by Mrs Monkeyboy if I even thought about it. Let me know what you
think. And moderators, please let them post stuff before you lock the thread. Please, please, please....

Doesn't bother me to build a sporter out of parts you can't make an original out of. Saves a gun. I hate to see any intact one messed up, of course.
I'd try to use period open sights and forget the scope. I don't think scopes were common on the German sporters of that era.

I have several Gew.88 based sporting rifles with claw mounts on them. Unfortunately the scopes are missing.
Mounts and bases for the Gew.88 can be purchased from New England Custom Guns http://www.newenglandcustomgun.com/ Call them and ask them to send you a Recknagel catalog. The catalog is in German but you will be able to find the mounts you need in there. NECGs can order the mounts for you as they are the US distributor of Recknagel stuff. Vlad |

They are nice, but their mounts cost more than the total cost of the rest of the restoration.

There used to be a company that made no-gunsmith mounts for Mauser actions, such as the M48, K98, and such. It was called Iron Elite, and I have a link for
them, but it appears that they no longer have that website. May not even be around anymore.
Anyway, they did make a mount that put the scope off to the left side so you could load and cycle a rifle with a straight bolt, such as the 1888. It might be something that could be made to work at least. They were around $100 as I recall. Possibly with some more searching, someone could dig up a working link.
