I really like the look and style this gun has. I see many examples of this gun and a variety of prices. How do I choose? Are there any tips you guys can suggest to me to buy a "good one"! I am too much of a newbie to know which ones to avoid.(if any) (identifying marks or range of ser. num.,etc.??) I see mainly the parkerized grey/greenish finish. But some blued. How would I know if the gun is worn out? Or any other conserns you might suggest I look for, or look out for. I figure on buying through one of the auction sites, but maybe this is the kind of thing my local gun shop could find for me??? Is there a good, better or best source to find a "nice" 52???--Thoughts??

There are other folks that can give more specific advice as to which type & where from, but IMO, get one while you have a choice. these are getting a little more hard to find without digging around a bit. Find the best one, in the nicest condition. Your best bet is to shop for one in person at shops and shows in your part of the world. That'll give you a good idea as to what to look for after you handle a few of them. Welcome to the forums and hopefully a 52 expert will hop in here any time now with definitive info for you.

They weren't in service for all that long. Most have been factory reconditioned. The one I picked up looked like new. They have a few weak points. Never dry fire them. The firing pins are made of a brittle metal and are prone to break if dry fired. There are better made replacement firing pins available. Also, they have a decocker, but are unreliable, so refrain from using it. You can test it by cocking it (not loaded!), sticking a pencil down the barrel. Eraser end first. while pointing the muzzle straight up, engage the decocker. If the pencil moves, the decocker is bad. If you try to utilize it, the gun will fire! Other than that, they're cool guns! Greg

A few years ago me and my new-2-me 52 went to a friends range in the country. I'd stripped it down prior to going, but didn't take the mags apart to clean and whatnot. Everything seemed in perfect shape and itching to be fired. The range was in a semi-tall maybe shin level grassy field. First, I'd not found any internet heads up on them yet, and had a hell of a time getting it to group. I think the 52 pros here will also add that they take a little getting use to as far as a proper grip pressure/hold to get them to shoot the way they are designed to. So I blasted away, it operated flawlessly with the first mag. Second mag shot fine as I remember, till it was time to reload. I took a knee in the grass to reload, and something in the mag seemed to be hanging up a little, so I carefully slid the bottom of the mag off then the mag spring shot out to only god knows where. I looked around to no avail. The mag spring in the other mag was slid into it's retaining notch/hole/tunnel whatever you want to call it. The other wasn't, and it shot out into never-never to be found land. I was tempted to take a rake and comb for it, but it was time to go. I loved the pistol though, and that hot little round it shoots is an attention getter to boot -- good luck, and check your mag springs at home in a room, not a grassy field like I did. I have seen a wide difference in price on the 52's especially lately. $135-$400+! Yikes! But they all look the same. Even with good pictures, the only variation seems to be with grip color and slight finish differences. None appear to be beat-up junkers. And none appear pristine. Just the occasional scratch or two. Some include 1 or 2 mags which would explain at least a $25 dollar diff. So I guess I'll just pick the cheapest I can find. Plus mags of course! And hope for the best. Unfortunately my 3 local gunshops never have these, and don't seem interested in stocking any. Since the first post, I have read about roller bearings that may wear out easily, and replacement firing pins? Has anyone had to replace these parts? And is it an ongoing problem for the 52? What-dya-think?
