It is for a break-top in good condition. Before everyone starts, I do know the dangers of using an old break top, but I know many here do shoot these old beauties with light loads. I have bullseye, red dot, and power pistol on hand. Let me know what you guys are using. Thanks in advance, Mike

USUALLY, for very small cases, they have only one load, and its DNR (Do Not Reduce). A squib risk will otherwise exist, but it would be less so with a lead (as opposed to jacketed) bullet. I'm no expert on these revolvers, but I doubt there would be a danger per se, but I think a lot of use will wear the unit. That said, in moderation, they were meant to be shot. Others who know more are sure to chime in. Bill

They ALWAYS down-load old cartridges like that because there are old guns out there. And there are no particular hazards in shooting the American break-top revolvers with the light loadings provided by the manuals. If you try hot-rodding them you will end up with a nickname like "lefty" or "stumpy", but with normal loads, they are pretty safe. As always, either know what you are doing, or have it checked out by a gunsmith first. -Mb

They'd be OK for light loads of smokeless in 32s, but in the 38 S&W, the cylinder hold is larger but the frame isn't that muh stronger and they stretch when used with smokeless.

And also remember that many of those top-break revolvers were made well into the 1940's. They were perfectly capable of using the smokeless factory loads of the time without destroying themselves. Otherwise they would not have lasted so long into the smokeless powder era. They are not strong guns, but they are normally just fine for the light plinking loads you find in the books. Posts: 334 (08/02/08 04:45 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	I use to load .32 short S&Ws with 00 buckshot and a small charge of Bulls-eye in my old Iver-Johnsons. You could use black powder or Pyrodex, if pressure worries you. Very cheap and easy to load & probably just as accurate and as effective on-target as the factory poppers. Too much fun. Those old breakactions are fun.
