I have a opportunity to pick up a nice K98 but the marking are throwing me. Behind the rear sight on the barrel shank, the factory code 132 is stamped but to the left of it is g36 and to the right of it is 40. Basicall it reads g36 132 40. The 132 marking is larger than the g36 40 markings. Also, it doesn't have Mod.98 on the receiver leg but in all other aspects resembles a regualar K98. It's a J.P. Sauer.

The number grouping you're referring to is the lot # of the barrel: g36 is the barrel or steel manufacturer code, I don't have a code list available but I know they're available and will relate this code to the actual manufacturing facility if that info has been uncovered, 132 is the lot number for the barrels from the manufacturer, don't know how many barrels were in a lot. and 40 is the year the barrel lot was delivered to the 98K factory. Depending on the time of year this lot of barrels was delivered to J P Sauer the barrel could've been used on a 1940 or 1941 rifle. |
