Why I fly fish.
This past weekend, my wife and I were invited to stay the night on my brother big 38' boat. It's got a nice state-room, head, and galley. He's
got it moored in a slip about 10 miles from the coast of Connecticut but we're really up on the wide part of the Connecticut river. Well, as you might
imagine, I'm an early riser and decided to take my bro's spingcasting gear for a bit of excercise at 0600. There were a lot of risers on the nice flat
water. I didn't, however, have my fly gear. I've vowed that from now on I'll have "SHTF" fly outfit ready to go at a moments notice.
I worked that spincasting gear for a good hour and nary a wiggle. I worked above and below with all the lures he had including all my original (many years
ago) favorites like the jitterbug and a good selection of Mepps lures. Still nuttin. Yet I watched as 3-5 pound smallmount were whacking the bugs on the
surface. That little incident reminded me about the reason I went to fly-fishing in the first place. You ALWAYS catch fish with a fly rod. You MAY catch it
with a spin-casting setup. If I had had my little 5wt setup with a 10 pound tippit and some bugs, I'd have reeled in a number of beauties.
Anyway, I just figured that I'd chime in here just to post up something to keep the forum moving.
I love fly-fishing. We've FF'd from the far Northern Maine Woods after hiking for 1/2 day up to remote ponds after being dropped by a float plane to
the rustic beauty of Wyoming and Montana's wild streams. We've even FF'd the tundra streams and rivers of wild Alaska, 400 miles from the Russian
border. There is simply nothing that can compare to a 30pound Salmon on a 9wt leaping for all its worth in the late afternoon Alaskan sunlight. We really do
enjoy that hobby and I'll never again play with spin casting gear. Right now I'm putting one setup in each car, period. I won't be denied again!!
