#1 MK III nose cap ? |
Lead | |
|
I just purchased several NO.1 MK III incomplete rifles that I plan on restoring. I am planning on starting with one marked GRI 1942. The nose caps included
are rounded and not squared with 2 having the holes for the stacking swivels and 2 without them. Does anyone know which would be correct for this rifle? I am
about to order some parts and I am not sure if I need to get a front stacking swivel set or not. Thanks.

As to what year India went to the squared nosecap I can't say, although I know they are readily available. As for stacking swivels, by WWII they would be
correct with or without. Many rifles with them originally would have had them removed at some point too, so it's not really worth the while to purchase
them for a restoration to WWII spec.

I think the purpose of the nosecap swivel, combined with the triggerguard/floorplate swivel found behind the front action screw of the Earlier Enfields, was to
allow troopers to board trains and navigate the narrow confines of troop ships with their rifles slung.
The early Mauser long rifles were available with a quick detachable rear swivel that could be pluged into a hole on the front of the trigger guard for a similar reason, or for parade use. The No.1's trigger guard/floorplate swivel mount was discontinued, but I've seen the nose cap mount still used on rifles without the triggerguard mount. PS The triggerguard mount was also used in the "Scout Rifle Sling" manner which Jeff Cooper revived. This was actually a common UK method of using the sling for target shooting or sniping. Some No.4 target rifles and other target rifles based on that action have a swivel mounted at the triggerguard/floor plate in front of the magazine.

Thanks for the replies. I did find mention that the squared nose cap was used post-independence so I guess I'm good with the rounded one. I will use the
one with the holes for the stacking swivel.
