I took a close look at the Camp Perry results and put together a little summary, which presents them in terms of overall performance by rifle type.
Of note when looking at the one-through-ten positions (not shown in the stats below), is that the Swedish Mauser took first place and took a total of seven
positions within the top ten.. A straight-pull Swiss came in second, and another, eighth. A US M1917 came in third!
Woo, things are getting exciting.
There were 330 rifles competing in the contest, and 98 of them were Swiss straights-pull -- 30% of the field was comprised of Swiss rifles . They must have
dragged out every one of those bulky closet dwellers they could find, and headed to Camp Perry with great determination. My thought is that they could have won
the overall match, if they had just two saboteurs with Swede Mausers enter the contest and shoot to score around 200th place. It would have skewed
the score just enough, but it's difficult to do that badly with the Swede.
Notice also that the US Krag came in first overall in terms of average ranking, but the number of entries was very small and the results may not be statistically meaningful. It would be nice to see a greater number of these Krags in the competition.
