Radom 1937 stamped on the receiver below a "crest" of some sort. It seems to be in very good shape with no rust or pitting except for a few small rust pits in the barrel. It has a very small 7.90 stamped on the barrel which I assume would mean 8mm? Now the bad news, someone "sporterized" this rifle by adding a custom stock. Would it be possible to find an original stock to put this rifle back the way it should be? The bolt has not been changed. It's still the straight bolt and as far as I can see other than the stock and adding Lyman peep sights this rifle appears to be original. Is it worth trying to put it back to it's original configureation or should I just use it as it is? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Posts: 14438 Oct 19 08 7:30 AM Forum Co-Administrator Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Welcome to the forums! 7.90 is the bore diameter (there's a more technical definition that I'm sure someone here will expound upon) but in short, it's 8mm. Finding an original Radom stock may be a challenge. Hit the auction websites, ebay, gunbroker, etc and baet the bushes at your local gunshows. IMO, it would be worth the effort to try to get it back to military trim. Those are hard to find rifles in correct configuration, at least they have been for me, especially one with a crest. I'm still trying to find one at a decent price that is in decent shape.

I guess I'll start beating the bushes and try to find an original stock to put this back to what it should be. In the mean time I will shoot it as it is. Sellier and Bellot has 8x57mm ammo and I was wondering if this would be a good ammo for it. Kind of expensive but it's supposed to be non-corrosive unlike most of the surplus military stuff I've seen. I guess I'm getting lazy in my old age and don't like going thru the drill of cleaning after shooting the corrosive stuff. Think I'll have to get some 8mm reloading dies and make my own. Sorry for all the newbe questions but I am totally unfamiliar with these old guns.

S&B is good ammo, as is the Winchester and Federal 8x57 when & where you can find it. Also, a little less harsh on the wallet is the ammo made in Yugoslavia. http://www.aimsurplus.com...artizan_Hot_Shot_8mm.html It's non-corrosive, shoots good and is reloadable. AIM is a great place to order from and decent pricing too. Reloading 8x57 is one of my favorite past times.

So far I am starting to believe this might be a difficult proposition trying to find pieces for a WZ98A. I guess I have a lot to learn about these great old rifles. On a side note, I watched a show last night on the military channel about sniper rifles and was suprised to learn that the US military used 8mm Mauser 98's and Enfield 303's clear up thru the middle of the Vietnam war. Guess that speaks volumes about how well built and accurate these rifles are.

Posts: 195 Jan 18 09 6:04 PM active member Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	PH ; Since your rifle is a W98 it will have the 29" barrel and be identical to the gew98 excepting having a 98k type rear sight. These polish long rifles are very hard to find wood for. The last polish W98 rifle stock I had that was unsanded and had all the nice polish proofs in the wood I sold for $225 some three years ago. Early polish W98's were built identically to the gew98 down to the rear sight being a Lange Visier. I had a bolt only mismatch 1923 Warzsawa made W98 - it was marked W98 on the sidrail and 1923 was the first year of production by poles.Other than the receiver being blued and having a polish 5 digit serial it was a gew98 clone. So other than being drilled and tapped for a commercial rear sight is the barrel still 29" and does it still have the original finish ?.

PS , take what is said on TV with a grain of salt... the US Military did not use 8mm mauser or 303 enfield sniping rifles.

Posts: 1 Mar 12 09 9:45 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I don't know if I'm in the right place but I have a nice 1927 dated kbk wz.1898 that I recently aquired. The stock is duffle cut but that is the only detraction. I paid high for it but it seems that the general condition of these rifles is poor to fair at best if you can find one at all. The blue on it is excellent and original rust blue. All parts a matching numbers and original. It came with the muzzle cap that's dated 1933 and F.B.Radom and has the original sling. I generally collect Japanese but good is good so I got this because it just looks so nice and isn't easy to come by. If someone wants to see pics of it e-mail me and I'll pass some on for your inspection and input.

Radom 1936 wz98a for a while that I inherited,I`ve recently cleaned it up,which I really didn`t have to do,but it came out beautiful and fires like a dream,but I can`t find any info for this particular rifle,can somebody please give me some kind of link or let me pick your brain a little......it seems to be a rare piece!!!!!! I`ve searched everywhere and cant find anything,all the ones I see have wood all the way down to the cleaning rod,mine does not even have a cleaning rod,my profile picture is the rifle I`m speaking about.
