So what's the opinion on the 1903 and 1903a3 CMP rifles they just released? Worth a gamble or wait and see. I really want one, but for $500 it makes me
hesitate.

It is my impression that this group is comprised of returns from American Legion/VFW/ etc. The majority have probably fired blanks, most of which are going to
be corrosive, and may or may not have been maintained as far as bores go. So, I would think the bore condition would be a gamble. It would be my opinion that
you would be better off shopping in the civilian marketplace (via gunshows, GunBroker or other online services) and perhaps being willing to spend a little
more cash to get a better example. Just my 2cents....
edit: Unless you might be able to go to the CMP store and examine it in person to confirm condition.

I agree.
Last go 'round I bought a Remington 03A3. Wasn't too bad--ME about 2 on the CMP guage, stock kinda beat up. rifling so-so. $522.95 delivered. Since then, I've purchased a number of 03A3's. All of them have been in better condition-- a few cheaper and a few more expensive. All of them a better deal than the CMP gun, IMHO. https://www.proxibid.com/...mp;lid=3850595&aiid=0 http://parallaxscurioandr...rums.yuku.com/topic/28901 https://www.proxibid.com/...aid=11374&lid=3150032 http://www.proxibid.com/a...mp;lid=3164616&aiid=0 CMP is a great deal for Garands and 30.06 ammo. Bolt guns--not so much.

So what's the opinion on the 1903 and 1903a3 CMP rifles they just released?
The one I received was CRAP! The person who supposedly "inspected it" must have been Stevie Wonder. Worst piece of garbage I ever received. I could have accepted a rotten barrel, I would have replaced it with a barrel from my stash of spares. Rem '03 with 03A3 barrel totally rotten, rear sight base forced on and split... and exhibiting evidence of being heated with a torch to fit it over the oversize 03A3 barrel shank (no, it wasn't turned down). The upper band was drilled through the top and threaded, and a bolt installed to prevent disassembly. Stock and handguard cracked. The entire rifle was beat, inside and out. Butchered by amateur gunsmithing. The only way you should buy is going in person and hand searching. If not, get one from the open market... it will be cheaper in the long run. |

I would not buy one via mail-order. If you can visit one of the two stores, you may find a gem, but I think the mail-order route would be a roll of the dice.

Thanks for the advice so far. I am close enough to hand pick one from the South Store. Problem is, I don't know when I can get away from work. I was
waiting until January for these. Money and time you know. I saw pictures in the GCA magazine that show a bunch in the background that came in with the Garands.
Wonder if they are clearing these out first or if this is it?

I managed to get up to the North Store on Thursday, and picked out a Smith-Corona that was about the nicest one I've ever seen. MW was a 1, TE was a 3,
and bore was bright and shiny. Stock had all cartouches, and was just about ding-free, as was the parkerizing. But this was the exception rather than the
rule. Many of the rifles were in less than decent shape. I had it in my mind I was coming home with a high-numbered Springfield, but after looking at every
one, that didn't happen. There were none that I would feel good about bringing home. I'm glad I'm within an hour of the North Store, so I can
hand-pick my guns.

Well it appears that they are all already gone. Maybe there will be some more soon.
