I can't comment on the safety aspect if you shoot it in a GEW 88

The "light load" comment should not be missconstrued and it does not mean it is compatible with the rifle you are going to shoot it in.

IIRC the GEW88 doesn't have the gas venting feature for safety.

The light load comment is a RELATIVE statement. Compare a Romanian hit on a silouhette metal to a TURk LB hit. Recoil is also noticably lighter with Romanian. It is for sure PUNY compared to 196 grain Yugo 8mm.

I reverse of that is the common misconception the Turk LB 8mm is loaded "hot". It is NOT. It just seems that way, because it chronos at 3,100 fps and has a hefty recoil compared to Romanian or other LB 8mm. Turk is loaded to specs for what they wanted it for.

Folks should shoot Turk side by side with Romanian to get the idea.

Also the cheap Romanian was used a lot for plinking in rifles that got "sticky bolts" with Turk 8mm. So the perception of "lighter loaded". Romanian rarely causes sticky bolt syndrome in M48 type rifles.

I know Romo shoots well in semi autos. There have been tons of posts on that subject.

Also FWIW. No one knows what rifle the 8mm Romanian was made for. We have tried to research it, and got LOTS of opinions, but no factual data. Maybe Doc AV will someday shed some light on the subject.

Yugo 8mm is made for their M48s and variations and Yugo has never issued LB for their 8mm rifles as far as I know.

Romo has a light bullet, compare it side by side to Turk LB 8mm and you will understand why the "light" load comment. The recoil is much less and Turk is notorious for causing "sticky bolt syndrome". Romanian usually doesn't cause "sticky bolt".

Romanian has been around for many years and used to sell for $29 per tin. It did not sell well, until 8mm started to dry up. Now people are buying it and think it is the greatest thing since white bread. Supply and demand.

Accuracy is relative and needs to be defined before carrying on a discussion. No Romo has ever shot as well as Yugo from the seventies or M75. This from years of testing MANY 8mm rifles and every bulk 8mm on the market over the last 8 years or so.

In a exc. shooting scoped M48 that will shoot one ragged hole at 100 yds. with seventies Yugo 8mm 196 grain will have groups open to four in. or so using the LB Romo. Also nowhere near the consistancy.

This has been tested over and over in many rifles over the years. Romo was on the back burner for years because the Yugo was available. Now it is selling for three times what it used to because it is still available.

Romo chronos much slower than Turk LB. I don't have my notes, but it is at least 500 fps slower than Turk LB 8mm.

Our Milsurp match shooters NEVER use Romo. They always use M75 or seventies Yugo. That is not debetable, it is a fact.

I'm sure if someone does use Romanian in a match the competition will welcome that dude.

I know others have posted they won 100 yd. matches with it, but no details are given. What type of rifle and what was the talent and rifles used by the competitors.

Kinda reminds me of the posters that used to post that Romanian was VERY accurate in their Mausers.

I asked them what accurate meant to them?

Reply was it hits the milk jug at 50 yds. everytime.

There are alwasy folks who chime in and praise the Romo, but accuracy is relative. Romo is good for plinkng silouhettes, but not for precise paper target shooting.

There are always exceptions to the rule. If a rifle has a bore compitable with the Romo LB and load then it may shoot as well, butr it is not the norm and we have NEVER found it to be the case. We shoot 8mm by the pallet full and have tested this countless times over the years.

It is more likely to shoot better in the long barreled Turks or other Long rifles.

No problem in hitting the 600 yard silouhette with Romo, that is still "plinking" by our standards, but those that require precise accuracy with 8mm will find it is nowhere near as consistant or accurate as Yugo 196 grain from the seventies or newer.

The German late thirties P codes has some batches that are better at very long range than Yugo M75, but it is now collectors ammo. We still use it for the 800 to 1,000 yds target shoots. Sparingly.

ON a side note. Our experience hand loaders have only been able to load 8mm that is on par with Yugo M75. Never have found the a load that will perform better.

If any serious shooters out there have found a load that is better. Please post the info and share.

We have laid out all the available 8mm on a table and invited our younger talented shooters to test it in scoped M48s and it ALWAYS is the same results. They choose Yugo seventies hands down for accuracy and consistancy. This was years ago and no need to re affirm it.

Like I said there are exceptions, so this is in gen.

If folks have very good results using the Romanian, it does not carry over to other folks who may want to use it in a entirely diff. rifle.

Also to get back to topic. Your 88 may not be chambered for the newer spitzer bullet. I am not an expert on Mausers, but that is a possility and you may get more info. from the Mauser forums. We have used onlly 98/29, M48 variations, K98s, Turk K Kale, 98/22, and maybe one or two other mainstream available Mausers in 8mm. Most other types of 8mm rifles were also shot, but no serious testing done.
