back in the 80's i would send for land catalogs from a company that listed rural and acreage for sale all over the USA. i noticed that some property's
in WVA had free natural gas service. was there some reason that a home owner got free gas??? if anyone knows i sure would appreciate the answer.

A buddy of mine found an underground pipe running along the front of his property, between the sidewalk and the street. He tapped into that pipe and said it
was plum full of free natural-gas, so why buy it from that gas-company?

It depends on the mineral rights assigned to the deed with the property.
Some places have a free access/useage to any and all gas/oil/coal deposits underneath their land, others opt for a trespass payment if they don't own the mineral rights, some get both. It also depends on which appears to be the best for the land owner when the offer was made. Some folks took a lump sum payment and waived all rights to the minerals, protection of access to said gas and minerals, etc....which has had tragic results in regard to the rape of the land and water resources in some parts of the state. Free natural gas would be a great thing to have in this day and age. Others don't have any access, rights or priviledges to any of the mineral rights if the landholders that worked the deal with the companies didn't think it through all the way. Those companies can really dig in and make a mess when they start drilling (especially the wildcat outfits that are "contracted" out to do the exploratory drilling for natural gas, some outfits are plumb insolent and incredibly rude to the land owners) or mining and most damaging is the jack-leg timber outfits that come in and talk select cut and start in with wholesale clear cutting if the owner isn't there keeping an eye on what the loggers are doing. Contrary to negative stereotyping, all of the folks I know around here have indoor plumbing in their homes (that means a bathroom with a flushing toilet, sink and bathtub and even a hot water tank too) and most any of the other ammenities that city folk deem to be more civilized. Don't be jealous because we have privacy, acreage and the ability to shoot out of the backdoor in our own private shooting range.

Another catch to free gas is they are always on a budgeted set amount and beyond that you pay a premium. I frankly know of no one who has ever hit that amount
but I guess it is possible. There are gas wells all over around here and when you buy your home and land it can come with or without oil, gas, and coal rights.
I have coal rights because I basically live on or near a former strip mine complete with the remnants of their access roads, my driveway for one, and they do
tax me a small amount for that coal. I think I pay something like $6.00 a year on my property taxes for it. Doubtlessly the usable coal was taken when they
used it as a strip mine many years ago. Next year my property taxes will go way down as I become old enough to collect my homestead rebate. It will make my
taxes on two acres, block garage with shop, and 1,600 square foot house about $128 a year. And people wonder why I don't live in NJ or DE any more? We have
problems with a straight 6% sales tax on most everything but I can live with that and also our gas tax is one of the highest in the nation too. Gas is still
$2.29 a gallon while it is in the $1 something range in Ohio and about $2.19 in Pa. I am happy here and enjoy the people and the critters immensely! Bill

My father has a hunting house on about a 150 acres in WVA over next to the Ohio border. He gets free natural gas but the bad think is that the gas has no odor
in it. It is a good think he does not smoke.
I think it is for sale if your interested Chuck......its got to be within a hour of you. Smokepole50 |

Papa G1 I was born in Hackensack and lived many years in Rutherford. Then we moved the first of many places in South Jersey, lived in West Deptford,
Harrisonville, and then Carneys Point. Finally had my fill and moved to Delaware and after Wilmington and Newark I escaped to West By God Virginia. I still
have one relative in Paterson, NJ but seldom visit because I soon realize why I left. My kids live with my Ex in Delaware yet and I go back there from time to
time. I fall back to the old saying I have no need to go back as I didn't leave anything there, other than my kids and I try and invite them down here when
ever they can get away.
Smokepole that is prime oil and gas country and also great hunting out there. Probably closer to me than Chuck and I go up that way from time to time for gun road trips. Most people don't realize they put a signal agent in natural gas to make sure we smell it when it leaks so I would guess it is odorless right out of the ground. Nice country on the Ohio border and there are many reasons to live there in Ohio too. Bill

Zee..........I asked my Dad about it this morning and he said it was 165 acres in Jackson County. If it was not 4 hours away I would buy it for a get away
hunting camp as there is already a liveable house there. The place is coverd up with deer. WVA really should change there mindset in regards to QDM and allow
more doe shooting.

A lot of the limits on deer hunting vary from county to county so it pays to look real close on what you see printed versus what is actuality. WV deer for the
most part are not heavy deer and don't weigh that much from my experience although they took some monster 10 pointers around me this year already. Was up
late last night fighting this sinus infection and the moon showed me a monster buck looking for apples on my hill in front of the yard about 4:30 AM when I
looked out the kitchen window. I have regular visits from a local 6 pointer who so far has made it through but the rifle season starts Monday I believe and I
guess that is what he really has to get through. Bill
