Gew 88 extractor question |
Lead | |
|
I just have to ask. Among the various Gew 88 parts I have accumulated, I have picked up two "half moon" bolt heads. One has an extractor and the
other does not. Presuming these head space correctly in one of the rifles I am rebuilding, I would certainly consider putting either or both of these back into
service. However, finding the proper "wide" extractors for these seems to be a tooth pulling ordeal and to say the least they are rather far and few
between. Although Swede Nelson has gone above and beyond the call of duty to reproduce extractors for "full moon" bolt heads, my basis question is
along the lines of, "Can one of these be used in a half moon bolt head?" I've tried fitting the full moon extractor in the proper mounting slot
on a half moon head and it obviously fits. Is there an increased chance of breakage if this is substituted for the correct part? Are there any other problems
of which I should be aware in doing this? Has anyone else experimented with this and -- if so -- how well did it work? Comments and first-hand experiences
would be appreciated.

With a well intentioned smile, it seems that my question relating to the use of "half moon" extractors in "half moon" bolt heads must have
stumped some folks. While I have on rare occassion seen bolts equipped with "half moon" bolt heads for sale, I have yet to see or find any regular
source for replacing one of the associated extractors should it be lost or damaged. Short of "prirating" one of these from a more or less complete
rifle, it appears that in common with replacement nose caps for Kar 88 and Gew 91 carbines, these items are not to be had for love or money from any source.
This being the case, it would seem prudent to suggest that folks having a Gew 88 with a "half moon" bolt head and matching extractor would be well
advised NOT to use that rifle for fear of breaking an irreplacable part. For those inclined to shot such a rifle anyway, it would be advisable to consider
purchasing and using a "full moon" bolt head and extractor (presumiong, of course, that it properly head spaces). Those can be readily replaced
whereas the "half moon" parts cannot.
