I just bought my M95 at Big5 for 69.00. Can anyone tell me more about my new rifle? All the original markings
match including the stock. Some of the markings I could not get a photo of are: An "R" stamped on the reciever
tang, An "H" on top of the buttplate. Some of the other markings are "S*5" and Wn**17. Is this a cutdown
rifle? I bought some surplus ammo mainly NAzi stuff but my daughter bought me two boxes of the modern
stuff. I have read that the Budapest rifles are harder to find. Thanks for all the info you can provide.

It was made in Budapest, and accepted into service by the Austrian component of the Austro-Hungarian Army in 1917. There are two little crests between the Wn (which stands for Vienna) and 17. I believe that * is actually a stylized Czech lion, and S-lion-5 means it was used post-WWI in the 5th military district in Czechoslovakia. The Czechs sold it to Bulgaria and it eventually was converted from 8x50R to 8x56R caliber. The conversion is denoted by the S stamp. It may have been converted by Austria for the Bulgarians or the Bulgarians did it themselves. A large H on the barrel shank would mean it was converted in Hungary. IIRC, the R stamp on the major components of the barreled receiver show Hungarian manufacture; a K stamp would stand for Steyr made parts. I hope this info is useful.
