   I have a Colt 1911A1 which had after market sights ( front and rear
) installed on it. What I wanted to know if there was a known gunsmith that can install original sights back on the gun without having to refinish. The
dovetail for the rear sight looks moved up at the very tips.

Depends on what's under the front sight, and whether it's been staked as original or silver brazed.
As long as it's been staked, and the finish under it hasn't been damaged, it can be replaced with no re-finishing. Basically the same holds for the rear. As long as the dovetail hasn't been altered and the slide finish is OK, replacement is easy. Most good gunsmiths can replace the staked front sight, but you need to find one who actually knows how the 1911 sight is REALLY staked on. Too many just have a general and idea, and simply remove the old sight, then stake the new one on. To get it to STAY on, the gunsmith needs to use a small Carbide ball cutter to carefully grind a small crater on the inside of the slide, under the sight tenon hole. This small "counter sink" gives the sight tenon a place to flow down into, and provides plenty of rivet after the excess is removed so the bushing can fit in. If the sight is simply staked on, when the excess rivet is ground off, all the rivet is ground off, and the sight will shoot loose. The rear sight is simply driven out from left to right with a nylon or brass drift, and the new sight is pushed in. |

Pretty easy with a staking tool for the front sight. BTW the original GI sights are pretty bad. Replace what you have only if its a collectible.
