Erfurt 1893 Rifle |
Lead | |
|
I inherited a Erfurt 1893 Rifle 8mm Mauser. I have been looking for information online about the gun and have not had good luck. If anyone out there could
offer me any info about the gun (ie. value, original pictures, etc) that would be great.
Thanks |

To begin, as based upon a recent study of Gew 88 serial numbers, there were at least 58,536 rifles such as yours made at Erfurt in 1893 (this figure is likely
low). Total Gew 88 production has been estimated to be as high as 3,250,000 rifles; they were produced from 1889-1898.
Value is obviously dependent upon a number of factors such as condition (is the stock cracked? is the bore sharp and bright? are any parts missing such as the rear sight slider or cleaning rod?), is the bolt complete (i.e., are the bolt head, extractor, and ejector present?), and how many parts do -- or do not -- match. It might be worth as little as $20-30 as a parts rifle to $200+ if in good condition. This site contains the most thorough discussions of Gew 88 rifle you'll find in any one place. Can you further describe your rifle? Several photographs would be very useful. |

Thanks for your response. For the most part the is fairly clean, and everything appears to be intact and working. I'm unable to provide pictures right now
because I just took the gun to a gun smith. He is inspecting the gun, cleaning it and making sure its safe to fire. The gun smith told me it looked good and
was holding up nice. However, he was unsure of what size ammunition the gun takes, but would find out. I found a picture on the internet that looks close to
what i have: http://i2.photobucket.com...reat%20War/Germany009.jpg
it would be the rifle at the very bottom of the picture. As soon as i get the gun back I'll take photos. |

Reading from the top they are:
(1)Gewehr 98 (2)Kar 98a (3)Gewehr 88 "S" (4)Gewehr 88/05 (5)Kar 88 If it looks like the one at the bottom, you have a Kar 88, nice. |

The last rifle in the photo appears to be the Gewehr 91, which is almost identical to the Kar 88 except for the model designation on the siderail and the
stacking hook. I look forward to your photos.

Oops, Fergus is right, it is a Gew 91, I missed the stacking hook. As he said, siderail will be marked Gew 91 if that is what it is. If it is a Kar 88 the
siderail will be marked as such.
