The past couple of days have been in the teens in single digits, and we have about 2 inches of blowing dusty dry powdery snow. Perfect weather for a Finn or a Mosin. For me, not so much. I actually did not go shooting last weekend, and that's about one of the first weekends I've taken off in months. I made up for it at the reloading bench though. Oh well, there is other projects to do. If I get all of those done, then in the next week or two when it warms up, I'll be able to go shooting with a clear conscience. What's the weather doing by you guys? I see that the Northeast is pretty warm but wet, the South and Gulf states are looking good, but the interior of the country is pretty miserably cold. Just for fun I compared my weather to Anchorage, Alaska, much better shooting whether an Anchorage right now!

The wind has been blowing and we lost some trees. The chickens are freezing, there are no birds, and I'm freezing my tookus off just walking to the shop. Constant winds of more than 20mph, currently hitting 23 mph with gusts to 35mph. Had six inches of snow Friday and it all drifted. OAT at 11 degrees currently with wind chill of about -17 degrees. Last Wednesday and Thursday I spent pretty much the whole day at the range and did some really satisfying shooting in perfect conditions. Air was so still and the temperature just right so that I could actually spot my bullet holes at 400 yds. Today, of course, it never got above freezing, and is currently headed for the low teens or single digits and snowing lightly, with perhaps 4-6 inch accumulation over the last 24 hours. The 24 hours prior to that saw serious gusty winds into the 50's here in the valley and in excess of 140 mph over the ridge tops. Damaging winds reported in numerous places North from here along the Highway 395 corridor. I've been doing some case prep in anticipation of a reloading bing during the bad weather that is due to continue through this week, with a larger storm expected towards the end of next weekend. Posts: 322 (12/15/08 09:38 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	there's an ice storm predicted for this area (Eastern Arkansas and West Tennessee) tonight and early tomorrow we've had some pretty mild winters here during the past 10 years, with very little measurable snow so this 'winter event' is a bit unusual, as all the schools, public and private, were closed early this afternoon and if you thought the gun shops were busy with panic buying, you should see the local grocery stores now that's what you call a feeding frenzy Bob

Just fill a bunch of beer cans with H2O and set them out on the back porch. You should have plenty of ammo for the mortar until next spring, without undue clutter in the refrigerator! Snowed on,rained on, and freeze dried all in a weeks time

I need one of those. I actually have two scopes that will do it, but they both wash out at about the same time as heatwaves distort the image. One is a 127mm Maksutov-Cassegrain that is mostly intended for astronomical viewing, but works as a mega spotting scope pretty well. I use a 26mm Plossl eye piece that gives it about 60x magnification. You really have to think about sight correction with this set-up though, as the image is upside-down and backwards. The other normal spotting scope I sometimes use is just a Burris Landmark 20-60 x 80mm which is much the more convenient one to use. The real secret is to fire big bullets. In this case I was shooting 45/70 BPCRS loads and some .43 Spanish, both of which were showing up real well at 400 yds on those days.On a hot summer day with a breeze blowing, forget about it! Actually last Thursday the conditions were so optimal that I was able to see some 6.5 x 55 Swedish bullet holes at 400 yds also, but only in the white. They were simply invisible when in the black. On more typical days, I can sometimes make out the bullet holes at that distance (they sort of come and go in the scope), but it is such a strain trying, with so much uncertainty, that it is hardly worth it. A friend of mine has a Kowa that definately does some better, but the price of his was quite a bit more than both of mine! His washes out in heat waves pretty quick after mine anyway, but it clearly is a superior scope.

But it actually feels like a heat wave currently, as the wind finally quit. We have had constant winds out of the Northeast blowing from 23 to 35mph steadily with gusts to 45mph since Friday afternoon. We had six inches of snow Friday and it all blew into drifts then the artic air mass came in behind it. Since Friday afternoon, the wind guage has not dropped below 23mph. And that put the wind chill factor of anywhere from -20 to -30 degrees F. This trailer house would shake when those 45mph gusts would hit. Like I keep telling everybody, that is why you will never hear me complaining about the two hot days of summer we are guaranteed each summer. And quite frankly, that was about the extent of our summer last year. The previous year (2007) I broke down and bought a portable air conditioner unit to help keep the trailer cool, as it was a hot summer for this area. Last summer, I never even plugged the air conditioner in once. Curt

We just had a blizzard over the weekend here in North Dakota, but the weather has improved in the last 24 hours. Right now we're sitting at -19 degrees (-38 with the wind chill) and most of the ~8 inches of snow we received has been cleared from the driveway and sidewalk. We had a few 3-4 foot drifts along the house (hooray for corner lots!) and then my stupid snowblower decided to crap out on me before I could get it all done, but at least now everything's cleared enough to allow foot traffic to move along as usual. I can't wait for the temps to jump into the 20s... in March or April. We'll be breaking out the shorts and t-shirts and will be making up for all the lost range time from over the winter. Cold is good, you can always warm up, heat/humidity is bad, it takes forever to cool down. I hate heat/humidity with a passion. We were supposed to get ice and snow this morning, but so far nothing is happening. They shut down a lot of school systems in anticipation of the event. I think I'll go throw some ice out of the freezer onto the driveway so I can at least pretend the day off was worth it... We just had our winter shoot this past Saturday, we started the day at 19f and wrapped up at 34f. Quite a nice outing!! A lot better than the 9f from two winters ago. It warmed up to a blazing hot upper 20's by the end of the shoot that day.

I brought a warm hat, coat and gloves and I'm going for my traditional daily 2-3 mile walk during lunch today. I'm looking forward to it too! Good idea about the H2O loading, AU, I'm all over that. MAYBE I'll go shooting a little this weekend, even if only off my buddy's back porch. That way I can reload the magazine in front of his wood stove and stay cozy.

I live in south Florida and the heat and humidity don't bother me a bit. Of course I've been here for over 30 years so I guess I'm used to it. I grew up in the north (Ohio), and loved it then, but I'd never move back. The weather is fine for shooting 365 days a year (yesterday it was 80 degrees), except for the occasional hurricane. Oh well, I guess no place has perfect weather. Be thankful we're not getting all the government we're paying for .... Will Rogers
