My wife is a nurse manager at VA hospital and today was her turn to be the holiday supervisor. As she was doing her rounds this morning there was a older vet in the ER that was in the process of being transferred up to her floor. She told him that she was sorry that he had to be in the hospital on Christmas day. He said that's alright it does not bother me because back in 1944 I spent Christmas day in a fox hole in the middle of the battle of the bulge, and the worst part was it was -15 degrees. He then said that every Christmas day had been a good day since then.

Posts: 5208 (12/25/08 08:42 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	Oh yeah, I really do respect those old veterans for everything they did, WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam and every other conflict. It's tough enough being away from your family but the holidays make things a lot more lonely. I know, I spent last Christmas "abroad" but we were just as busy as any other day so it passed by quickly without too much time to think about being depressed. Now, I'm waiting to see what the future brings so I can find out where I'll be next Christmas season........I hear Afghanistan is nice this time of year Aug 2010 ETS baby!!! Ended up having to go into work and spend the whole day there (civilian employee at Edwards AFB). The squadron commander had to come back from leave to be there, the deputy director, the director of engineering, and several engineers. Something just needed to get done. When tempted to gripe about it, I pointed out that we were NOT in a foxhole somewhere halfway around the world ducking bullets & artillery in miserable weather. My dad was an infantryman in Patton's army at the Bulge. I wish he was still around to talk about it. I wish a Merry Christmas to you all and a special blessing upon those who have defended our right to enjoy it. Crunch
