hello everyone, can you use 303 british brass to make 8x56r? I know you can use 7,62x54r and 45-70, but I wanted to know if you can use 303 brass also. thanks

Looking at case dimensions the .303 shoulder would expand .05" and the web would try to expand .026" which would stress the brass and the web would
become weak leading to head separations. Centering the .303 when forming would necessary as an off centered case would budge on one side. Using a length of
brass tube over the case from base to shoulder would limit expansion and stress.
The rim diameters are another issue. .303 are .034" smaller than the 8x56R and would not extract. Using a brass washer over the base then machined is one solution. I have used brass tubing and machined washers to make cases for antique rifles. The question is it worth the extra effort when cases are available. To fire form rifle cases I use 10gr of pistol powder, fill the case to the neck with corn meal, pack cotton in the neck then fire in the rifle. I have converted the primer pocket on 1938 German surplus 8x56R brass to Boxer LR and annealed the neck and shoulders. They have held up to 10+ reloads. |
